For those interested in such topics, the Security Focus website has published an excellent four-part document on information security laws and the ways those laws can affect security professionals.  While none of them explicitly addresses security concerns within an academic environment, as the author states "the way the law treats a particular topic provides one point of focus that may help you allocate effort and resources to best effect. "
