Thanks everybody!
I probably want to get back to Eudora, but for tonight I just tweaked OE.
Originally I turned on the "Secure Password Authentication" option on the
servers tab, that must be what was breaking it. I hadn't actually seen the
other SSL options on the tab further back. SPA off and SSL on twice seems to
work.

Will try Eudora tomorrow.
