When you log into the workstation, check the NetBIOS cache to see if it
knows the IP of a Domain Controller:

nbtstat -c

I just ran into a problem where a bunch of 98 machines, on first boot,
are not getting that from Subnet Broadcasts or WINS, and it shows up as
a 0.0.0.0 entry in the NetBIOS name cache... haven't figured out what's
causing it yet tho - definitely name resolution at some level...

  take care,

        Subject: Win98 client login problem

        hi,

I still have a few Win98 clients on my Win2000 AD domain.
Starting this morning, when a normal user account tries to login on
Win98, they get an MS Networking popup error: "The share name was not
found. Be sure you typed it correctly." This prevents them from logging
in.

My administrator account can login normally on the 98 client.
The user can login fine on a Win2000 or XP client. This seems to have
affected all of our 98 clients (three have complained so far, maybe one
or two left).

Google and MS Technet don't turn up any good info for that error
message. I'm using this as an excuse to complete the Win2000 migration,
but am curious what might be happening.
        -jav
