0I use two companies from Kalamazoo. I don't know if they offer service in
East Lansing, but I'll mention them anyway in case it's interesting to
compare. I don't do any contracts.

One is West Michigan Laser. The hourly rate is something like $50. It's a
small outfit, and is not authorized to do warranty work or anything like
that. The guy is really good at mechanical problems on the common HP
Laserjets, so I often use his service when it seems the problem is in his
strong area. I don't know if his company has gotten smaller lately --
nobody besides the owner ever answers the phone anymore, and nobody but the
owner himself seems to have made on-site calls for some time. I haven't
asked, though. Maybe he saves the visits to our site for himself. He has
run into a couple of problems he isn't equipped to handle, e.g. on a Color
Laserjet 4500.

The other is Precision Printer. The hourly rate is $80. I think they can
do warranty work. They seem to have all the necessary HP
certifications. They've been able to deal with problems on our Laserjet
8100 and Color Laserjet 4500 type printers. A couple of times I've had
them out to solve a problem that in retrospect I could have solved myself,
if only I had known how to dig deeper into the bowels of the machine. But
their technicians have been glad to show me what they're doing with the
understanding that the next time such a problem comes up, I'll probably
deal with it myself. They have been reasonably responsive, work quickly,
and I have been happy with their work.
