Interns support REEF’s educational programming and general operations from the REEF Campus in Key Largo, Florida. The REEF Campus, with the state-of-the-art Ocean Exploration Center, Interpretive Center, Administrative Building, and nature trails, serves as an educational center for visitors and groups. It is also the headquarters for supporting a membership of over 85,000 individuals who engage in REEF’s international citizen science and education programs.

Interns gain leadership experience and participate in guest engagement, interpretation, citizen science, community outreach, and education. They learn about partnership development, non-profit operations, donor relations, communications, marketing and promotions, data management, event planning, and public speaking. In their free time, they have ample opportunities to enjoy all that the Florida Keys have to offer, including diving, snorkeling, and kayaking, as well as interfacing with other nonprofits and government agencies in the area.

REEF provides free housing and a $400 monthly stipend to each intern. Participants are required to have reliable transportation and must have completed at least two years of undergraduate work. Successful applicants are detail-oriented with strong organizational skills, and are able to work in a diverse and collaborative team across multiple disciplines. A strong interest in ocean life, marine conservation, citizen science, and diving is a plus.

While diving is a benefit of the program, it is strictly voluntary and not a requirement for the REEF Marine Education & Conservation Internship. All diving and snorkeling opportunities are on a volunteer basis.
