Summary of Work:
Responsible for supervision, budgeting, and management of the Migratory Game Bird Management Section, including supervision of the migratory game bird biologist and hiring and supervision of numerous temporary and seasonal staff. Develop recommendations for migratory game bird hunting seasons and management programs. Plan, coordinate, supervise and conduct surveys to determine the status of and harvest of migratory game birds, including compiling and analyzing data and writing reports. Develop and conduct migratory game bird research projects that are designed to contribute to the knowledge of annual production, hunter harvest success, and seasonal population indices to aid in the setting of harvest season lengths and bag limits for migratory game birds. Maintain extensive migratory game bird databases, records, files and literature. Attend, participate in and conduct meetings of the Central Flyway Waterfowl Technical Committee, Central Flyway webless and dove technical committees, numerous other subcommittees (including serving as chair subcommittees). Actively participate in local, regional, national and international committees and working groups. Coordinate with state, regional national and international wildlife agencies and organizations on migratory game bird population and habitat programs. Coordinate with and advise Department leadership and staff on migratory game bird populations, habitat and management issues and related wildlife issues. Participate in other departmental wildlife surveys and management programs.
Minimum Qualifications:
Requires a minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in wildlife biology or wildlife management, or closely related natural resource science degree and four years of professional work experience with a wildlife or natural resource management agency is required. A Master’s of Science degree may be substituted for two years of actual work experience.
The position requires extensive knowledge of migratory game bird identification, behavior, biology, life cycle ecology, population ecology, population management and habitat (especially breeding habitat) requirements. Applicants must be able to communicate effectively both orally and written with wildlife management professionals, the media and the public, possess strong organizational and project coordination skills and work independently on multiple tasks with overlapping deadlines. Applicant must be able to work collaboratively with others on cooperative projects and to resolve problems. Applicants must be able to swim and possess skills in using canoes and small watercraft with paddles and outboards and be able to serve as an observer in small aircraft for low level waterfowl surveys. Must be able to obtain and manage a USGS Master Station Bird Banding Permit.
Must have or be able to obtain a Class D North Dakota driver’s license. Must be able to lift at least 75 pounds, and be willing to travel extensively.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preference will be given for
* Experience in wildlife management, surveys and analysis of survey data, particularly with migratory game birds
* Experience designing and conducting wildlife research and publishing the results
* Advanced statistical and biometric analysis methods for planning, implementing and evaluating studies and ecological population modeling
* Supervisory experience
* A working knowledge of database management and SAS
* A working knowledge and experience using GPS, GIS and ArcView or related GIS Software
* Actively participating in waterfowl and migratory game bird hunting
