Subject: Vacancy announcement for US Dept. of Ag. Wildlife Services in Harrisburg, PA

Good morning Jim,

I would like to introduce myself. My name is Tony Roland and I am the central district supervisor with the USDA Wildlife Services program in PA. You very likely don’t remember me, but you were my PSU advisor at University Park long ago. I was informed that you are the person to provide this announcement to so it could be shared on the alumni listservs. I hired a recent MSU graduate and he is working out great for us. I am posting a vacancy announcement to hire 1-2 more individuals based out of our Harrisburg, PA office and thought I would reach out to MSU to share the announcement with any recent graduates that may be interested in the position. This is a 13 month term position with benefits that usually gets extended pending funding and employee performance. Attached is the vacancy announcement and below are some additional position duties and some recreational opportunities in the area.

Harrisburg Position Duties:
Duties for this position include managing damage from multiple species including but not limited to Canada geese, black vultures, white-tailed deer, European starlings, and feral swine. Employee will be assisting with duties to support the National Wildlife Research Center, National Feral Swine Program, National Rabies Management Program, and National Disease Program in addition to the PA WS Program. Wildlife management methods will include nest & egg treatment, application of repellants, bird dispersal using pyrotechnics, paintballs, RC vehicles, and lethal take using firearms, traps, and toxicants. A pesticide license is required. Late night or early morning work and travel may be required. Other duties include fabrication of traps and other equipment to be used in the field. Position requires someone that can work independently as well as with others and be safety conscious.

Recreational Opportunities:
Harrisburg is located in central PA and has abundant recreational activities to pursue no matter what your interests are. Fishing, boating, kayaking and bird watching opportunities abound on the Susquehanna River. The Susquehanna River has abundant smallmouth bass, walleye, catfish, and panfish. The PA Game Commission manages over 1 million acres of State Game Lands scattered across PA providing plenty of hunting opportunities to pursue white-tailed deer, black bear, turkeys, furbearers and small game. The PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources manages 2.2 million acres of state forests and maintains 124 state parks for hiking, camping, bird watching, fishing, hunting, and boating. Strap on your hiking boots and take a stroll on the Appalachian Trail and take in the breathtaking views of the area. If you enjoy bird watching then a visit to Hawk Mountain Sanctuary can allow you to view migrating raptors from the scenic overlook. Harrisburg is surrounded by culture and history with the Susquehanna Art Museum, PA National Fire Museum, The Oakes Museum of National History, Civil War Museum all located in Harrisburg or take a drive to visit Gettysburg National Military Park or Valley Forge National Historical Park. If you like chocolate, then a short drive to Hershey Chocolate World may hit your sweet spot or visit Hershey Amusement Park for some thrills or Zoo America to learn more about North American wildlife or the Giant Center to listen to your favorite performers. If you just can’t have enough outdoor equipment then visit Bass Pro Shops in Harrisburg or take a short drive to Cabela’s in Hamburg to fill your fishing or hunting equipment needs.

Please let me know if you have any questions about the announcement.

Thank you,

Tony Roland
