Friends and colleagues –

I am pleased to forward the attached announcement of a recruitment in my department. The call refers to “Wildlife Ecology” but note that we are looking for someone with strong quantitative skills and the ability to teach an upper division course on the biology and conservation of wild mammals (this course has attracted 130-160 students annually for three decades, underscoring campus interest). If you want to pursue research at a top-flight institution and with a department of considerate, supportive colleagues, and you want to be paid to lecture on the wonders of mammals, then consider this job. I am not on the recruitment committee, but I would be happy to answer any questions about UC, WFCB, etc.

Yeah, California probably has too many people, but the mammal diversity is spectacular (122 genera, ca. 235 species), as is the ecosystem diversity. It isn’t that hard to “escape” and find good places to study mammals. And if urban mammals are your focus, we have plenty of that too. Note that the University of California has a remarkable Natural Reserve System (UC-NRS<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https*3A*2F*2Fucnrs.org*2F&data=05*7C02*7Cmammal-l*40si-listserv.si.edu*7C86e2a68f8f62499ae9c808dcd69e346f*7C989b5e2a14e44efe93b78cdd5fc5d11c*7C0*7C0*7C638621225565435774*7CUnknown*7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0*3D*7C0*7C*7C*7C&sdata=myjXhiAf294Ebq9Bd5SbqlM5GmrL4YVrDvaTtsohu7M*3D&reserved=0__;JSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSU!!HXCxUKc!y44utC_prVn96aWLvJtK_geF03cu5XDMBD_pKKlO-lfLHnaX8JzfKV3X1ljXGav9RGGPpeTunqrp5YwzLmG4edo3mlFD4evHfQj1ng$>), with over 40 reserves dedicated to teaching and research needs. Davis oversees six such reserves, but all NRS reserves are available to UC faculty.

UCD has a number of world-class graduate programs<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https*3A*2F*2Fgrad.ucdavis.edu*2Fgraduate-programs&data=05*7C02*7Cmammal-l*40si-listserv.si.edu*7C86e2a68f8f62499ae9c808dcd69e346f*7C989b5e2a14e44efe93b78cdd5fc5d11c*7C0*7C0*7C638621225565435774*7CUnknown*7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0*3D*7C0*7C*7C*7C&sdata=Cmma0Ec8klDTmVwbv4lN4tWeZWR*2BRuUC4GPOhxU8j*2BM*3D&reserved=0__;JSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJQ!!HXCxUKc!y44utC_prVn96aWLvJtK_geF03cu5XDMBD_pKKlO-lfLHnaX8JzfKV3X1ljXGav9RGGPpeTunqrp5YwzLmG4edo3mlFD4esbCoyz0w$> (Ecology, Animal Behavior, Population Biology, just to name a few) that help break down departmental “walls” and allow students (and faculty) to work with faculty across campus.

And the benefits are as good as it gets. Excellent health care (physical, mental, parental), very strong retirement packages.

If you don’t study mammals, you may wish to change careers to join THIS department on THIS campus for THIS job.

Good luck –

Doug
