Aquatic Zoology Technician/Professional Aide
Michigan Natural Features Inventory (MNFI), a program of Michigan State University Extension, is hiring 1-3 Aquatic Zoology Technicians to assist with research, monitoring, and inventory projects focused on native mussels and aquatic invertebrates in Michigan.
Up to 3 technicians will be hired to support MNFI aquatics research, monitoring, and inventory projects specific to native mussel and aquatic macroinvertebrate ecology and conservation.
Working closely with the principal investigators, technicians will work to build and organize information on native mussels and aquatic macroinvertebrates to support the growth and development of Michigan’s Heritage Database and support the biodiversity research conducted by MNFI.
Duties will include working with large sets of native mussel occurrence data, identifying aquatic macroinvertebrates to genus and family level, processing samples, and the use, development and support of GIS systems specific to aquatic species. Specifically, Michigan’s Natural Heritage Database Biotics and supporting applications within the ESRI environment such as ArcGIS Online, Survey123 and Field Maps.
Positions may include a limited amount of field work. Field sampling will regularly require long hours and flexible work schedules under adverse working conditions (e.g., hot and humid weather, long and difficult hikes in wetlands, and biting insects). A valid driver's license, travel to study sites in southern Michigan, and use of a personal vehicle (mileage reimbursed at standard rate) may be required.
