We're searching for a fish technician or skilled fisheries student to fill a spot on an upcoming Colorado River monitoring trip in the Grand Canyon (July 3-22, 2024). Ideally, we're hoping to recruit someone who can PIT tag fish and/or conduct nighttime boat electrofishing (as a netter) in search of native and non-native fishes. Half-trips are possible!

Hello!

The USGS Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center is seeking a fisheries technician skilled in PIT tagging and/or nighttime boat electrofishing netting to join a Grand Canyon fisheries river trip this July 3-22, 2024. Participation in a half-trip is possible. Interested parties, please contact Lindsay Hansen ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) ASAP.

Work Description:
This trip will include working at night (from sundown until ~2-3 AM, rarely until sunup).  Tasks may include nighttime boat electrofishing, administering PIT and VIE tags to fish, carrying heavy buckets on rocky beaches or between floating boats, keeping organization of buckets, tying knots, learning to identify fish by species, working in spiky, slippery or sharp bushes and rocks, and/or handling, measuring or tagging living fish. Non-work hours can be spent at your personal discretion (resting, relaxing, some small hiking).  All trip participants will camp on the river bank for the duration of the trip and will be taught and expected to implement safety measures while in and around moving water and potentially in very hot, dry temperatures (~120 F). Meals and transportation from the USGS campus in Flagstaff to the study site will be provided. There is no cell service at our study sites. USGS can loan coast-guard approved life jackets, tents, cots, sleeping pads, and dry bags, but we ask participants to bring their own sleeping bags, head lamps, and other personal gear. Native fish trips downstream (through Grand Canyon) include whitewater rafting on motorized boats.

We need participants to be in Flagstaff at least one day prior to the trip start in order to load personal gear onto the boats, and we ask that you do not plan travel away from Flagstaff until at least one day after the listed trip end date.  Lodging in Flagstaff before/after the trip is not covered by USGS.
