Chronic Wasting Disease Deer Surveillance Technician  - (23000AEE)
Description

The Massachusetts Department of Fish & Game works to preserve the state's natural resources and people's right to conservation of those resources, as protected by Article 97 of the Massachusetts Constitution. To carry out this mission, the Department exercises responsibility over the Commonwealth's marine and freshwater fisheries, wildlife species, plants, and natural communities, as well as the habitats that support them.
The Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (DFW) is responsible for the conservation - including restoration, protection, and management - of fish and wildlife resources for the benefit and enjoyment of the public.
The Department of Fish and Game is accepting resumes and applications for the position of a Chronic Wasting Disease Wildlife Technician (Scientist) contract position assigned to the Field Headquarters in Westborough, MA. This position is expected to last 940 hours (6 months) with an estimated start date of November 1, 2023.

The Seasonal Chronic Wasting Disease (“CWD”) Deer Surveillance Technician will primarily assist with implementation of a USDA grant funded program to implement surveillance of CWD during the deer hunting season at biological deer check stations across the Commonwealth. This will be conducted in coordination with the Deer & Moose Project Leader and the USGS Massachusetts Cooperative Research Unit. The technician will collect retropharyngeal lymph nodes from harvested white-tailed deer and assist with training other staff to do the same. The technician will be responsible for preparing, organizing, and shipping samples to the required labs and then organizing the results for uploading to the SOP4CWD data warehouse. The technician will also assist with other grant objectives to develop and implement educational programing focused on prevention of CWD.

DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1.        Assist the Deer & Moose Project Leader (Game Biologist IV) with training staff for biological deer check stations and disseminating supplies across the Commonwealth.
2.        Collect data and communicate with hunters at biological deer check stations.
3.        Coordinate the collection of retropharyngeal lymph nodes from white-tailed deer at check stations.
4.        Collect other biological samples at check stations including for SARS-CoV-2 surveillance and ticks for vector-borne disease surveillance.
5.        Organize samples for shipping and submission to the appropriate testing facilities.
6.        Collaborate with UMass team for submitting results to the SOP4CWD data warehouse.
7.        Assist with the development and implementation of educational programming focused on CWD prevention.
8.        Assist with writing USDA CWD grant related reports.
9.        Assist with coordination of program objectives including the implementation of structured decision making by external facilitators for the development of CWD management plans and proposed regulatory changes.
10.     Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE (List knowledge’s, skills, abilities)
1.        Working knowledge of biology, mammalogy, ornithology, ecology, and related sciences.
2.        Working knowledge of deer anatomy for sample collection.
3.        Experience communicating wildlife management and research (both orally and written) to the public and professionals.
4.        Knowledge of scientific research methodologies (hypothesis testing, research design, data collection and data analysis).
5.        Experience using computer programs for organizing and communicating wildlife-related data (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, GIS, etc).
6.        Ability to drive and access to a vehicle to travel to check stations during biological deer check.

Preferred qualification:

1.        A Bachelor’s degree or higher in wildlife management, wildlife biology or closely related field and experience conducting wildlife disease surveillance particularly on deer.
QUALIFICATIONS ACQUIRED ON JOB (List knowledge’s, skills, abilities)
1.   Knowledge of Natural Heritage spatial databases
2.   Knowledge of NatureServe/Natural Heritage methodology.

LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator’s License, or equivalent, and an acceptable driving record.
