Biomilab LLC, a biotech R&D startup in Lansing, Michigan, is seeking a scientist to work with a small team of researchers developing a biological control agent for invasive mussels in North American open waters that is safe, cost-effective, and does minimal, if any, harm to non-target species. A BS/BA, MS/MA, or PhD degree is required. Preferred candidates will have experience with aspects of the following: freshwater mussel biology and collection, mussel colony aquaculture and maintenance, and freshwater bivalve anatomy and tissue collection. Also helpful (but not required) is experience with techniques of bivalve spawning, cell biology/cell culture, molecular biology, nucleic acid manipulation and analysis, protein analysis, microinjection, and cell transduction. An interest in learning diverse molecular and cell biology techniques, developing new methods, and applying them to research objectives is necessary. Overall, the work required will approximate the duties of a graduate student or post-doctoral researcher in a typical laboratory environment. Candidates must have U.S citizenship or green card to be eligible.
Candidates will be required to keep records and collect data, assist with reports, grants, and presentations, and interact with collaborators. A familiarity with computers, productivity software, and good internet/video practices is needed. Experience with website maintenance and/or a willingness to learn is also a plus.
As part of a small team working on a complex problem, the candidate needs good interpersonal skills, the capacity to work effectively both independently or with others, the ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously and change research direction as dictated by results.
Candidates also will be required to actively participate in non-scientific aspects of the company, including maintenance and upkeep of equipment and infrastructure, clerical duties, running errands, helping to ensure a clean and safe workplace, and compliance with regulations.
The bulk of work to be performed by the candidate is bench-level research that will require in-person attendance in the laboratory. Occasional travel outside of the lab for specimen collection or other purposes will also occur. Preferred candidates will be expected to work at least 40 hours/week. In general, 9-5 daily work hours are preferred, but can vary. It is expected that candidates will reside close enough to the laboratory that they are readily able to come into lab to ensure continuity of experimental goals and on short notice. Employees will be asked to conform to a “cell phones at work policy” that is consistent with a work environment that is productive and free of distractions.
Above all, interested candidates must be committed to the success of the project since it may be the only means of restoring much of what has been already lost and what is under imminent threat in North America’s aquatic ecosystems.
Yearly salary and benefits of $28,000-$45,000 commensurate with education and experience is currently available for two years beginning in October 2023. As a start-up, it is hoped that the company and its employees will continue to grow and prosper significantly over the lifetime of the project.
Interested parties are asked to send a recent CV/resume, cover letter describing your current work, reason for interest in the position, and e-mail/phone contact information for two academic references to Dr. Marie-Claude Senut at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>. Other queries may also be sent to the same e-mail address. At present, much of our job search is focused on applicants currently residing in Michigan and who would be willing to visit our lab in Lansing for further discussion. Thanks for your interest!
