Limited Term Full Time Field Technician Position

Great Lakes Environmental Center, Inc. (GLEC) is recruiting a highly motivated candidate for a one-year full time Field Technician position based at the Lansing, Michigan office of Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE). GLEC is an established employee-owned contract research firm that is a national leader in protecting aquatic environmental resources through work for federal, state, industrial and non-profit organizations. Responsibilities for the position include Fish Contaminate Monitoring Program (FCMP) sample collection and processing throughout the state of Michigan. The work schedule may include holidays, weekends and work days over eight hours.

This position will be approximately 60 % field work and 40 % office work. The candidate should possess a bachelor's degree in the natural or physical sciences and have the ability to perform tasks associated with conducting work in inclement weather, electrofishing unit operation, operating and trailering a boat, wading, filleting fish and the use of Microsoft applications including experience entering data into Access® databases. This candidate will be required to hold certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Duties related to this position include:

  *   Serving as a field crew member to collect fish from select Areas of Concern within Michigan surface waters as well as the Great Lakes and its tributaries using a variety of techniques including electrofishing (backpack, barge and boat), gillnetting, cast netting, seining and hook and line.
  *   Serving as a field crew member to conduct caged fish studies to assess chemical concentrations in select Great Lake tributaries as requested by the FCMP.
  *   Serving as a field crew member to process fish samples collected from select Areas of Concern within Michigan as well as the Great Lakes and its tributaries for contaminant monitoring.   *   Serve as a field crew member to collect water and sediment samples for studies assessing contaminant concentrations in Michigan's Great Lakes tributaries.
  *   Pick-up and delivery of fish samples collected by partners of the FCMP (e.g., Michigan Department of Natural Resources) for processing at the Lansing EGLE laboratory.
  *   Assisting with data entry and data analysis related to assigned field work.
  *   Assisting with field collection gear cleaning and maintenance.
