Position Title: Jumping mouse/Pocket mouse Small Mammal Technicians

Job Description/Summary:
Colorado Natural Heritage Program Zoology Team conducts remote, field-based surveys for rare small mammals in Colorado and other western states. In 2023, the Zoology Team will be conducting population monitoring of the threatened Preble’s meadow jumping mouse (PMJM), endangered New Mexico meadow jumping mouse (NMJM), and the olive-backed pocket mouse. In addition, CNHP will work collaboratively on riparian habitat mitigation project to create habitat for PMJM and monitoring PMJM and habitat conditions.

Colorado Natural Heritage Program seeks 2-4 technicians to coordinate and conduct small mammal surveys and vegetation sampling in Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico. Technicians may be working independently or part of a team. This work entails conducting small mammal live trapping and camera trapping, handling and marking rodents, conducting vegetative and environmental data sampling, and managing large quantities of data for analysis and reporting. Most field visits will require tent camping but pop-up trailers and hotel stays may be available at some locations. Technicians will be traveling using a four-wheel drive vehicle on rough roads. This position provides an excellent opportunity to gain experience sampling for the federally endangered and threatened jumping mouse subspecies, gain experience sampling for pocket mice, and the opportunity to understand landscape-scale conservation issues for multiple species.

Required qualifications:
1. Prior experience conducting small mammal surveys, including live trapping;
2. Collecting, entering, and managing wildlife data;
3. Good physical condition and ability to work long hours in the field, travel by foot off-trail in rough terrain, and work through inclement weather;
4. Prior experience navigating in remote, road-less areas;
5. Demonstrated ability to work well with others under harsh field conditions; and
6. A valid driver’s license required for all positions. Experience driving 4x4 vehicles on rough roads. Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
7. The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CNHP will not provide visa sponsorship for this position;
8. Must be able to comply with all applicable regulations to obtain an Access Badge and public trust clearance. Furthermore, candidates are required at a minimum to complete a NACI/SF85 and successfully pass a federal background check to remain eligible for employment by CSU.

Preferred qualifications:
1. Familiarity with western U.S. rodents and other small mammals;
2. Experience collecting vegetation and environmental data in the field;
3. Experience marking small mammals with radio-frequency identification tags (passive integrated transponder tags);
4. Experience sampling for federally-listed species and following permit guidelines;
5. Experience being task-oriented, but demonstrating the flexibility to accomplish tasks as schedules or access get disrupted; and
6. Prior experience working on military installations and interacting with Department of Defense personnel

Duties:
Traveling to study sites (50%)
1. Navigation
2. Driving
3. Camping
4. Reliably locate field sampling locations using four-wheel drive vehicles, UTVs, and global positioning systems.
5. Safely and efficiently access sites, complete field forms, operate and maintain field equipment, and effectively manage collected data.

Conducting field sampling (50%)
1. Navigation
2. Deploying traps
3. Retrieving traps
4. Handling small mammals
5. Conduct live trapping and camera trapping for rare small mammal species.
6. Safely handle and take measurements and genetic samples of small mammals.
7. Enter and maintain data in electronic formats (databases, spreadsheets, GPS, GIS).
8. Thoroughly document all fieldwork using field notebooks, survey forms, maps, GPS, digital tablets, and cameras.
9. Manage raw and analyze data files in assorted databases.

Pay rate range: $20 to $23 per hour depending on experience

Application instructions
Applications will be accepted until the positions has been filled or through April 30, 2023, whichever comes first. PLEASE ADDRESS THE QUALIFICATIONS, DEMONSTRATING YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH EACH.
