Description
Description: The McCleery Lab with the Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation at the University of Florida is seeking 2-3 highly motivated field technicians for research in the Greater Everglades Ecosystem. The technicians will assist two graduate students in the field studying Burmese python management techniques and predator impacts on native rodents. The technician will NOT be handling pythons-- this is primarily a python management and small mammal project so a strong interest in mammalogy and/or invasive species management and ecology is preferred. This is a temporary, full-time position that will run from mid-March 2023 until August 2023. The project has 4 components: 1) live-trapping of small mammals, collecting personality and morphometric information, and attaching radio collars 2) monitoring radio-collared rodents via radio-telemetry, 3) caring for domesticated rabbits in python-proof pens, and the 4) monitoring of traps and photos to report python sightings. Additional duties include data entry, cleaning rabbit pens, and repairing pens as needed. The technician will be responsible for driving state vehicles and working with the public and state wildlife colleagues. Applicants must be comfortable working long days in hot and humid conditions with venomous snakes, biting insects, and alligators. Early mornings will be required. In addition to a state vehicle for work-related travel, field housing is provided.
Qualifications
Qualifications: A B.S. in wildlife ecology or a related field is preferred, but not required. Applicants must be willing to work the full field season, possess a valid driver’s license, and maintain a good attitude while working in sometimes adverse conditions such as high heat and humidity and with potential wildlife encounters. Previous experience with field work, especially radio telemetry or small mammal trapping/handling is a plus, but not required. The candidate must be able to carry heavy objects and work independently and collaboratively with all project members and the public. Ideal candidates will be detail-oriented, enthusiastic, and have a good sense of humor.
