We were once again awarded an MSU Extension Apprenticeship grant to bring on a sophomore or junior level student for the summer of 2023!!! Please help spread the word.



The paid position will be building upon the municipality needs assessment effort of 2022 by expanding to now include neighborhood and homeowner Associations across the Jackson Metro. The successful candidate will lead the focus groups under the guidance of the mentor and other partners to ascertain neighborhood and homeowner associations experience and needs regarding urban wildlife.  This effort will be used along with the UWIN monitoring program data to inform future urban wildlife Extension programming in Mississippi.

Key Points

  *   Paid 10 weeks ($5,000)
  *   A blending of research and Extension by developing and conduct an applied research project and then disseminate to various professional and community audiences.
  *   The successful applicant will be involved in the development of the second phase of a community needs assessment for the Jackson, MS based project.
  *   Development of the focus group materials (e.g., question script, informed consent, charts, etc.), coordination of logistics, and facilitation of the sessions.
  *   Initiate the qualitative analysis of the transcripts and supporting materials from the focus groups and synthesize the data and findings into a report.
  *   Assist the MSU Extension mentor in conducting the 2023 Central MS Master Naturalist Program, an adult continuing education 8-week course on Mississippi’s natural resources, and key partner in implementing the Urban Wildlife Program by providing trained volunteers. This will include course planning and logistics, field trip coordination, and the opportunity to teach a subject in the apprentice’s related field of study.
  *   Shadow the MSU Extension mentor at professional and civic group meetings, field days, and client consultations.
  *   Participate in field work (maintaining motion-sensor camera array) with volunteers and graduate students.
  *   All the sweet tea and other southern dietary experiences you wish to try!
