I am excited to announce the advertisement of 8 permanent positions in the Green Bay Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office (FWCO), the FWS  fish and aquatic office for Lake Michigan basin and its watershed.  The announcement opens up in USA Jobs  this Thursday October 6th and closes on October 12th.  It is being advertised two ways:  1) internal merit advertisement  and 2) Pathways recent graduates advertisement.

Altogether between FWS Region 3 and Region 5 FAC, there will be over 50 positions available in various facilities.  These are entry level positions with opportunities to grow in the position to higher grade levels.  In Green Bay FWCO (located in New Franken, WI), we are hiring 4 technicians and 4 Fish and Wildlife Biologists.  The following is a description of the Branches these positions will be housed in:

Aquatic Invasive Species Branch:
1 Technician and 1 Biologist to assist in delivery of the Early Detection and Monitoring Program, Environmental DNA Program,  and the Grass Carp Strike Team.  These programs utilize all types of gears and new technologies to detect the potential of new or expanding aquatic invasive species populations in the Lake Michigan basin

Partnerships and Habitat Branch:
1 Technician and 1 Biologist to assist the vast diversity of the work including working on assessing and rehabilitating lake sturgeon populations across the Lake Michigan basin in partnership with State and Tribal agencies.  In addition, they will work with partners to restore aquatic connectivity through the FWS Fish Passage Program, assess and monitor brook trout populations pre and post fish passage restoration and they are expanding to a focus on assessment and science of native mussels.  They also work with other Branches and partners to conduct habitat assessments and suitability for native fish in the lake and rivers, and we work to fully implement our tribal trust responsibilities by providing  technical assistance tribes and delivering products with the latest technologies.

Native Species Branch:
1 Technician and 1 Biologist to work in the open waters of Lake Michigan to assess, monitor, and study high priority native species in Lake Michigan proper.  Most of the work is conducted off of our 57' research vessel the R/V Smith.  A lot of the work, but not exclusively,  is centered around lake trout rehabilitation, lake whitefish monitoring and studies, and reef mapping and analysis in the basin.  The Branch is bringing in new technologies to help conduct the work including but not limited to multibeam technologies for mapping.

Great Lakes Tag and Recovery (Mass Marking) Branch:
1 Technician and 1 Biologist to help lead our coded wire tag recovery crew and a biologist to assist with tagging of the fish in our crew of automated tagging trailers.  This Branch is vital component for much of the population science for our species in Lake Michigan.  Millions of fish are tagged before being stocked into the lakes.  The tag recovery crews are stationed across Lakes Michigan and Huron to work with fisherpeople, including the States and the Tribes, to collect the coded wire tags from adult fish once they are caught.
