A public hearing March 8 to discuss our proposed Lake Huron Coastal Preserve in Alabaster Township saw 57 people attend virtually and offer overwhelming support for the project.

Following the public comment section of the meeting, the township board voted unanimously to support their Parks and Recreation Committee's recommendation and apply for funding from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund (MNRTF) to acquire the property.

"All the comments were in favor of the property becoming a public preserve," said Land Protection Director Heather Huffstutler. "The connections to the trail and the potential for a quiet place to walk, hike or bird watch were at the top of the most anticipated uses."

A grant application is due to the Trust Fund board April 1, followed by a lengthy review process expected to wrap up by December. Anyone wishing to voice their support of the project may do so by emailing Alabaster Township, [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.

Huron Pines is accepting applications for a seasonal Coastal Restoration Technician and a seasonal Heartland Restoration Technician at our Alpena and Gaylord offices, respectively.

Restoration Technicians will participate in implementing a variety of habitat restoration projects across aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems in Northeast Michigan. Working as part of the Huron Pines Stewardship Team, these dynamic positions will include invasive plant management, large-scale vegetation inventories and sensitive habitat restoration. Other tasks include planting native species, collecting stream/river data, conducting trail maintenance and providing outreach and education to the general public.

These full-time positions run from May 3 to Oct 29, 2021. Applications will be taken until the positions are filled.
