Description

Outreach has not been as effective as desired in motivating anglers and boaters to take actions to reduce the spread of Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS). The goals of this project are to determine their awareness of AIS issues and decontamination practices, identify impediments to adopting positive behaviors, and identify strategies to improve the effectiveness of outreach. The graduate student involved with this project will take a leading role in developing and implementing surveys of anglers and boaters, analyzing data collected, and writing grant reports. The student will work with the project team of academic and Michigan Department of Natural Resources agency staff to develop and test outreach materials. The student will have responsibility for supervising at least one research assistant, and coordinating with other team members in data collection.



Qualifications

B.S. in Fisheries and Wildlife, Environmental Science, Community Engagement, Natural Resource Management or related field

GPA of 3.0 at a minimum, GPA of 3.2 or greater is increasingly competitive

Strong interest in natural resource management and the human dimensions component of resource management. Applicant must be excited to work with the public to achieve management goals. Applicant must be self‐motivated, hard‐working, and have excellent interpersonal skills. Strong written and verbal communication skills are critical, and applicants must be comfortable working with a team of academic and government agency partners. A valid driver’s license is essential as travel between the Michigan State University campus and study areas is required.
