Description of Duties:  The Terrestrial Specialist is responsible for developing and implementing the Yuma Regional Game Management Program. This position will initiate, coordinate and conduct game surveys and compile and analyze game survey and harvest data.


Major duties will include:
•         Formulate regional game management goals and objectives and harvest strategies and season dates
•         Formulates and develops game management and development projects based on wildlife objectives
•         Prepares annual budget requests for regional game management activities, expend funds and coordinate manpower to ensure adherence to Federal Aid and Department guidelines and objectives
•         Evaluates program effectiveness and provide input to program manager relative to regional personnel performance in the area of game management
•         Collects and compiles biological data on game populations, oversees game species research projects, prepares reports on game management findings and activities and maintain all regional game management records and data
•         Coordinates with outside agencies and organizations on game management issues and concerns, prepare official Department responses and briefings for regional game management issues, review and comment on documents within and outside the agency related to wildlife management issues
•         Acts as game management expert for the Region, responds to Agency and public requests for information, analyze and formulate recommendations to address game species nuisance and depredation complaints and review applications and issue special licenses relatives to live wildlife rules and laws
•         Investigates and ensures compliance with live wildlife regulations
•         Performs other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The candidate must have knowledge of: Ecological principles, scientific study design, statistical design, wildlife species, habitat, and management principals, wildlife inventory and population management techniques, wildlife capture techniques, handling and marking, and nuisance wildlife abatement techniques.

The candidate must be skilled in oral and written communication, operation of 4X4 vehicles, boats, computers, GPS and radio telemetry equipment, designing and analyzing scientific studies, game surveys and other wildlife data collection techniques.

Candidates must be able to work independently and in coordination with others, properly evaluate and apply data to program outputs, plans and use time effectively and efficiently, to effectively fly and conduct surveys in fixed wing planes and helicopters, and resolve conflict resolution.

The preferred candidate will have aerial surveying, monitoring and/or aerial telemetry experience. The candidate must have a Bachelor’s or advanced degree in wildlife or closely related field from an accredited college or university and two years professional experience in wildlife research/management or wildlife research. An advanced degree in wildlife sciences or closely related field from an accredited college or university may substitute for one year of required experience.

Employment is contingent upon completion of a post-offer medical/physical examination and the agency’s ability to reasonably accommodate any restrictions. Position requires possession of and the ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment.
