Employment Dates:

April 29th, 2019 through September 30th, 2019 or 719 hours, whichever comes first.

Work Hours    7:30 am – 4:00 pm Monday - Friday



Pay Rate:       $17.06 per hour



Brief Job Description

·         Assist with maintaining State Game Areas in Ingham, Clinton, and Gratiot counties. Tasks will include operation of farm tractors and implements to till, plant, spray and mow fields for food plots and native grass plantings. Mow brush on dikes and trails with rotary cutter or chainsaw. Other tasks may include equipment maintenance, building maintenance, gate repair and installation, waterfowl banding, wildlife sample collection, assisting with wildlife surveys, crop damage inspections, and other duties as assigned. Will also be expected to handle alive or dead wildlife when assisting full time staff with projects such as banding, capturing injured wildlife, or collecting specimens for disease testing and get them to the Lab.  Office duties such as answering phone calls and cleaning facilities will also be expected.



Selection Criteria:

                Required

·         Education:    Possess a High School Diploma or GED certificate.

·         Experience:  No specific amount or type is required.

·         Possess a valid driver’s license.

  *   Will be required to have a medical examiner’s certification (health card) as an employee that will operate a vehicle with a Gross Vehicle Weight rating (GVWr) of 10,001 pounds or more, or a combination vehicle with a Gross Combination weight rating (GCWr) of 10,001 pounds or more.  The cost of the medical examination will be covered by the State of Michigan.
  *   May be assigned duties that require the application of pesticides, which may require certification or registration as a pesticide applicator in compliance with the Pesticide Control Act of 1976.





Desired

·                     Possession of or working towards a degree in Wildlife Management, Wildlife Biologist, or a related field.

·                     Flexibility to work various hours and dates, up to 40 hours per week, including some weekends.

·                     Ability to work independently.

·                     Ability to communicate well with co-workers and the public

·                     Knowledge of the safe use of hand and power tools including welder and cutting torch

·                     Experience operating and maintaining chainsaws

·                     Knowledge or experience relating to wildlife or DNR programs.

·                     Knowledge or experience in handling nuisance wildlife

·                     Experience handling live, injured/sick, or dead wildlife.

·                     Knowledge of the safe use of agriculture and construction equipment.

·                     Knowledge and ability to identify Michigan flora and fauna

·                     General office work, including basic computer knowledge, photocopying, answering telephones, etc.





Screening Criteria:

·                     Possess a high school diploma or GED certificate.

·                     Possess a valid driver’s license, medical card.

·                     Experience interacting with customers or the public.

·                     Experience safely operating and maintaining hand and power tools including chainsaws

·                     Capable of lifting heavy objects including carcasses for disease testing and dumped trash on State Game Area lands.

·                     Handling live and dead wildlife or animals.

·                     Experience operating and maintaining tractors and various farm implements.

·                     Possession of or working towards a degree in Wildlife Management, Wildlife Biology, or a related field.

·                     Experience working for any wildlife related agency.

·                     Experience identifying Michigan flora and fauna

·                     Experience using Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Powerpoint)

·                     Experience handling crop damage

·                     Possesses current special Licenses or certificates (Pesticide Applicator, CDL or First Aid)
