The Visiting Great Lakes Outreach Associate, Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant position serves as a full-time, 24-month position located at the Illini Center in Chicago, Illinois.   On a day-to-day basis, this outreach associate works closely with two IISG specialists: Pollution Prevention Program Specialist and Community Outreach Specialist, but reports to IISG’s Outreach Program Leader.



This position has two focus areas. 1) The outreach associate will develop and conduct extension and outreach activities for IISG’s pollution prevention program, with a special emphasis on natural lawn care and the Lawn to Lake program, as well as management of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in the environment, microplastics pollution in the Great Lakes, and other emerging contaminants of concern. 2) The outreach associate will develop outreach products and manage projects for the Cooperative Science and Monitoring Initiative and Great Lakes Literacy programs, in particular, working with regional scientists and Great Lakes stakeholders, as well as educators and their students.



One full time temporary position is available

Specific responsibilities of the Visiting Great Lakes Outreach Associate are as follows:

•         Develop and conduct extension and outreach activities for IISG’s pollution prevention program, with a special emphasis on natural lawn care and the Lawn to Lake program, as well as management of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in the environment, microplastics pollution in the Great Lakes, and other emerging contaminants of concern.

•         Develop outreach products and manage projects for the Cooperative Science and Monitoring Initiative and Great Lakes Literacy programs, in particular, working with regional scientists and Great Lakes stakeholders, as well as educators and their students.

•         Collaborate with outreach specialists and user groups to develop informational products.

•         Aid in determining the appropriate message to best reach a particular audience.

•         Serve as the point person for IISG’s Lawn to Lake extension activities.

•         Assist with programs that connect educators and their students with Great Lakes science.

•         Develop and maintain program web-based resources and social media.

•         Represent IISG at appropriate events and on selected committees both regionally and nationally.

•         Significant overnight travel, including living aboard a research vessel for a week or more at a time will be required.

•         Comply with all University of Illinois Extension Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity policies and guidelines in all aspects of Extension work; assist unit staff with data collection for Affirmative Action, Gender, and Targeted reports as needed.

•         Perform other duties that contribute to and further the mission of the unit as assigned.

•         To perform the functions of this position, the employee will be required to perform work both within an office and outside in the communities that are served, and must have the capability to travel from one location to the other in a timely fashion.  Employee is responsible for securing personal transportation.  A valid driver’s license is preferred.  Some work will be required during evenings and/or weekends.  When working, the employee may be exposed to a variety of environmental factors to include, but not limited to, hot or cold weather, exposure to noise and allergens, and uneven ground.  In performing the functions of this position, the employee may be subjected to various mental and physical demands as well to include, but not limited to, independently traveling to and performing work at different locations, lifting and moving items that may occasionally weigh up to forty (40) pounds and frequently weigh up to twenty (20) pounds, and twisting, pushing and pulling movements. Administrative Relationship: This position is administratively responsible to the Program Leader for Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant.



Qualifications (Required):

•         Bachelor’s degree in natural resources, geography, or related fields.

•         Knowledge of and interest in water quality and ecosystem health in Illinois, Indiana and the Great Lakes.

•         Relevant experience conducting natural resources extension or outreach, including planning and presenting at workshops for diverse audiences and making technical information accessible to a lay audience in written and oral formats.

•         Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

•         Ability to work independently yet serve as part of a team.

•         Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

•         Ability to work irregular hours, including weekends, and participate in overnight travel, some of which will be aboard a Great Lakes research vessel.

•         Valid Illinois driver’s license required.



Qualifications (Preferred):

•         Experience with outreach programs conducted by non-profits, university-based units, or other similar organizations.

•         Experience with video production.

•         Experience working with educators.

•         Experience with StoryMap, WordPress, and Drupal.

•         An interest in finding creative methods to educate the public about water issues.

•         Familiarity with current pollution prevention issues, including natural lawn care principles.



Additional Information

The position is a temporary, full-time, benefits-eligible, non-tenured academic professional position appointed on a 12-month service basis.  This position may become non-visiting at a later time dependent upon funding and/or programmatic needs. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date.
