PROJECT OVERVIEW: Grassland bird populations, including those migratory species breeding in the mixed-grass prairies of the northern Great Plains, have declined more than any other guild of birds over the past few decades. This project aims to determine basic demographic rates of grassland-nesting songbirds on their breeding grounds including nest success and productivity, in addition to adult and juvenile survival. Focal species include Baird’s Sparrow, Grasshopper Sparrow, Chestnut-collared Longspur, Lark Bunting, and Sprague’s Pipit.
INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES: Interns will participate in a demographic study of grassland-nesting songbirds in northeastern Montana and western North Dakota. One intern will be placed at each study site from early-May through early/mid-August 2017. Interns will work alongside professional seasonal technicians and permanent BCR staff to conduct a wide range of research activities intended to monitor nesting success, adult and juvenile survival, and habitat characteristics. Applicants must be able to walk long distances carrying field equipment, and be able to work long days that begin pre-dawn. Applicants must also be comfortable working independently in the field (after receiving training).
SKILLS INTERNS WILL GAIN
Interns will gain hands on training and experience in a range of avian research methods including: radio telemetry tracking, nest-searching and monitoring, vegetation sampling, bird identification, use of mist-nets, and depending on individual ability, safely handling and banding birds. The National Aviary's Conservation and Field Research Department is looking to hire a seasonal intern (possibly two) for nest searching, nest monitoring and associated studies in a long term study of Louisiana Waterthrush on streams near the Powdemill Nature Reserve in the Laurel Highlands of western Pennsylvania.
The ideal candidate will be happy working independently and have some experience working in the field to band birds, find and monitor nests, and collect blood samples. Enthusiastic, hard-working candidates lacking in any of these skills can be trained, however--what is most important is enthusiasm, patience, and persistence! LOWA nests are not too easy to find, but the habitat that waterthrushes use for nesting is beautiful forested mountain streams in a very scenic part of rural southwestern PA (near Ligonier) with many hiking and recreational opportunities. There is also the opportunity to interact with other researchers and interns working at Powdermill.
The successful appplicant will have their own vehicle, enjoy being outdoors, be an early-riser, and be able to work full-time from April – July (minimally May and June). I am looking for four field technicians with strong work ethics to assist with the osprey hacking program in Illinois as part of the osprey recovery effort for this state-endangered species.
The positions, based at different sites, have the following responsibilities: * Daily Observations - conducts daily behavioral observations of osprey chicks at the hacking site to ensure their well-being. Makes notes of presence of potential predators or competitors in the vicinity of the hacking site. * Daily Tracking - conducts daily tracking of ospreys once they fledge and notes their locations before migration. * Food Preparation and Feeding - conducts daily preparation of fish and feeding to the hacked ospreys. * Planning and Coordination - conducts regular fish pick-ups from the project partners. Experiences working with birds of prey, as well as paddling skills, are highly preferred. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, ArcGIS, and GPS is highly desirable. Successful candidates must be a team-player, demonstrate strong communication skills, follow instructions well, and pay attention to detail. Candidates must have a commitment to field personnel and equipment safety. Hours/Schedule: This is anticipated as a full time (32-40 hours per week), seasonal position, beginning April 25 and finishing Aug 20 (begin and end dates are flexible). The station will be open for a minimum of six hours per day, 4-5 days per week during spring, beginning at dawn, weather and other factors permitting. An additional hour of data entry is expected for each day of banding. It is at the discretion of the volunteer intern to work effectively as conditions dictate. Banding and nest box checks will occur on 2-3 days per week during summer, but the total time commitment is expected to be similar to spring, with the difference constituted by additional support for other field projects, ongoing data management tasks, and/or possibly data analysis and report/manuscript development, if the candidate has an interest and aptitude. Qualifications: Current college-level students or individuals holding a Bachelor’s degree in related field and proven interest in pursuing field biology as a career. Turnstone is currently hiring field surveyors and crew leaders to conduct surveys for the marbled murrelet, a threatened species of seabird that nests primarily in coastal old growth forests. These positions are considered full-time seasonal. Surveys will be on federal, state and private lands in Oregon. Marbled murrelet surveys follow an exacting protocol, and surveyors will be required to work independently during pre-dawn hours in backcountry areas. The position involves extensive travel, hiking in the dark (occasionally long distances), navigating forest terrain, and enduring regular periods of inclement weather.
Crews will be stationed in several coastal communities in western Oregon. Surveyor positions begin in mid-April and run through August 5, with the possibility of an earlier start date and/or extension depending on project needs. Training and surveyor certification will be held in Northern California prior to the start date of surveys. Opportunities to work on other projects after the end of the murrelet season may be available for the excellent employee.
Salary is $2100-3100/month, depending on experience. Housing is provided in most areas, depending on the project, and occasional camping will likely be necessary. Description: AVIAN POINT-COUNT TECHNICIAN (1) needed for a study of breeding landbirds in the mountains, forests, and riparian habitats of northwestern Montana (mid-May – mid-July) with the Intermountain Bird Observatory at Boise State University. Work will be conducted specifically in the Kootenai and Flathead National Forests of northwestern Montana. This is very rugged, remote and challenging terrain. Duties consist of standardized point count surveys, vegetation surveys and data entry using Integrated Monitoring in Bird Conservation Regions (IMBCR) protocol. Technicians will travel across diverse habitats identifying hundreds of bird species.
Qualifications include: 1) the ability to identify 200+ species of Western birds by sight and primarily by sound 2) ability to work independently (alone =90% of the time) for the duration of the field season 3) strong physical/mental endurance to complete 1 survey per day per 10-day hitch 4) ability to navigate off-trail in remote, densely-vegetated, steep and rugged landscapes using topographical maps and GPS units 5) willingness to work in landscapes occupied by apex predators (bears, mountain lions and rattlesnakes) 6) and careful and accurate data collection/entry/management. Multi-day, solo backpacking trips may be required. Technicians must provide their own backpacking/camping gear. Each applicant must possess strong interpersonal skills in order to communicate and work effectively with private landowners, fellow technicians and the program manager.

Job Description: US Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) and Great Basin Bird Observatory (GBBO), is seeking to fill multiple positions for Interns to conduct avian biological surveys primarily targeted at greater sage-grouse at multiple study sites across Nevada and California. Work hours will be irregular and include nights and early mornings, as well as weekends. The Nevada landscape is beautiful but rugged and challenging to work in. Job Description: Two volunteer field assistants are needed for four months from approximately Sep. 1, 2017 – Dec. 22, 2017 for a study of the social and reproductive behavior of satin bowerbirds in Queensland, Australia. Male satin bowerbirds court females by dancing at courtship arenas called bowers, which they augment with colorful decorations. The research will focus on monitoring interactions at bowers and on experimental manipulations of bower decorations.
The assistant will enjoy fantastic wildlife viewing opportunities (wallabies, kookaburra, echidnas, etc.) and hiking opportunities on their day off. Room and board will be provided, however, assistants must provide their own airfare to and from Brisbane, Australia.
Qualifications: The study site is rugged, and stinging trees, paralysis ticks, feral pigs, and venomous snakes are common. Applicants must be able to hike rough areas off-trail, navigate treefalls, and maintain a positive and energetic attitude despite long hours in variable weather conditions. Encounters with the general public are common. Cell phone reception is limited, and assistants will often work alone in the field.
Duties include bower searching and monitoring, trapping and measuring birds, counting bower decorations, sound recording, and data entry. Previous experience with banding and color band resighting is highly desired. Ability to drive a manual transmission vehicle is preferred but not required. Work schedules and duties may vary, so flexibility is critical. This experience is most appropriate for applicants interested in a career in behavioral ecology, and with previous field experience.

Position Description: Field technicians (1–2 positions) needed from early May through July 2017 for a study of riparian songbirds in the Ozark Mountains of eastern Oklahoma. Field work will involve early morning point count surveys for breeding songbirds at 30–40 sites, plus surveys of vegetation composition and structure, lepidopterans, and amphibians.
Technicians will often work with 1 other team member and away from the Graduate Research Assistant, so the ability to get along with other people and make good decisions on the fly will be crucial. Additional duties will include navigation with GPS units, legible data collection, data entry and proofing, and communication with project collaborators and other researchers in the area.
Qualifications: These are temporary field technician positions in the Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management at Oklahoma State University. Experience identifying Ozark birds by song is essential; please demonstrate in your application that you have – or could rapidly develop – the ability to do so. This skill combined with a sense of responsibility, professionalism, safety, and an immunity to drama will be important in developing an effective field team. Applicants should be in good physical condition (e.g., able to hike over rugged terrain for several miles a day), have a valid driver’s license, and be prepared to handle chiggers and ticks, mosquitos, and long days under hot and humid conditions. WildResearch is seeking 1 to 2 bird Banding Assistants to assist with the 2017 Spring Migration Monitoring Program at Iona Island Bird Observatory (IIBO), stationed near Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Responsibilities: The site has 14 nets that open a half hour before sunrise for 6 hours each day. Under the direction of the IIBO Program Manager, and the Bander In Charge, the Banding Assistant will be responsible for assisting with: ** bird banding/mist-netting, ** visual monitoring of birds at IIBO, ** data entry and QAQC, ** training station volunteers, ** potential for conducting point count surveys and daily estimated totals, ** assisting with public banding demonstrations for school groups and other visiting guests, and ** interacting and representing WildResearch with the general public at IIBO.
Qualifications: Some mist-netting, bird banding experience, and data entry skills are required. The IIBO program aim is to train volunteers through hands on bird banding opportunities. The successful candidate must therefore work well with others and show enthusiasm and patience for training volunteers. Must demonstrate skill in identifying North American birds by sight and sound. Familiarity with IIBO and WildResearch’s mission is an asset.
Terms: This can either be a full-time or part-time position on everyday of the week between April 15 and May 31, 2017. The pay rate is $80/day, and does not include transportation or housing. Average length of day is 7.5 hours in the field; however, this may vary with weather and bird capture rates. This position is ideal for anyone interested in increasing his or her banding experience.

AVIAN RESEARCH TECHNICIAN

TWO (2) MORE AVIAN RESEARCH TECHNICIANS needed for songbird and habitat surveys in Nevada's backcountry between May 8 and July 16, 2017 for Great Basin Bird Observatory. Half season appointments are also possible; the possibility of work extending past the end dates also exists.
Duties include bird surveys via point counts and area searches, vegetation surveys, and data entry.
Qualifications needed include experience identifying western birds by sight and sound; ability to collect field data under challenging conditions (heat, cold, remote sites); familiarity with western flora; working knowledge of MS Excel for data entry; valid drivers license and experience driving 4wd vehicles. Training workshop for all survey protocols will be provided, but prior bird identification skills a must. Applicants must be in good physical condition, as long hours in field will be required in sometimes difficult terrain. Ability to work independently and in remote locations is a must.
Compensation: up to $2200/month (depending on experience). Housing will be provided in some areas, but remote camping will be required on a regular basis.
