SEASONAL BIRD STEWARDSHIP PROJECT COORDINATOR, SARASOTA

Position Summary: Audubon Florida seeks a Seasonal Stewardship Project Coordinator to support beach-nesting bird conservation work in Sarasota County. The Coordinator will work on beaches throughout Sarasota County, a shoreline distance of about 37 miles, but predominantly in the central and northern portions of the county where shorebirds and seabirds have nested historically.
From February to August (“breeding season”), the Coordinator will be responsible for performing bird monitoring and protection work under Audubon’s “Restoring Florida's Shorebird & Seabird Populations” Contract. This project performs a spectrum of independent, beach-nesting bird conservation tasks with responsibilities that include the following, in addition to other as-needed duties:   **Posting symbolic fencing around beach-nesting bird sites and maintaining said posting; **Monitoring nest sites weekly or more often for evidence of disturbance or predation; **Performing weekly or more frequent bird surveys including number of adult pairs of shore/seabirds, number of downy chicks, number of feathered chicks, and number of fledged young; and ** Helping protect sites from disturbance through stewardship activities, to include: recruiting and training new volunteers, advising and partnering with volunteers to chaperone beach-nesting bird colonies during busy warm-weather weekends, educating beachgoers about these species and encouraging compliance with posted areas, and engaging in outreach to user groups through presentations at organizational meetings.
This is a seasonal, full-time, grant-funded opportunity for 26 weeks from approximately March 10 – August 31, 2017 with an exact start date to be finalized once funding is secured. This position also will be funded in 2018 - 2020; funding may be available in subsequent years.
Essential Functions:  By closely collaborating with Associate Director of Bird Conservation, s/he will ensure:   **All Sarasota County beaches are effectively surveyed during the state-prescribed beach-nesting bird survey windows;  *Bird survey data (presence and absence) is entered into the Florida Shorebird Database weekly;  *All active nesting sites are monitored weekly or more often, and stewarded as appropriate (to be determined in consultation with the IBA Coordinator).
Additional responsibilities include:  *Collecting accurate data as assigned, and submitting associated activity logs on a scheduled timeline.  *Contributing to technical report writing and submitting content for the program.  *Mentoring and advising volunteers in monitoring, surveying and stewardship activities.  *Educating and engaging the public around coastal bird conservation through outreach at beach sites.  *Cooperation with Audubon partners, including but not limited to: Sarasota County Audubon leaders and volunteers, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission biologists and law enforcement officers, and Sarasota County staff.
Qualifications and Experience:  *Bachelor’s degree in biology, wildlife ecology or related field required; Master's degree a plus.  *2-3 years' demonstrated expertise in shorebird and seabird identification and performing bird surveys a must.  *Strong interpersonal communication and problem solving skills; demonstrated ability to work independently and maintain accountability for work products.  *Excellent judgment and decision-making skills, one who possesses a high degree of integrity in all deliverables.  *Demonstrated experience working with external partners and volunteers.  *Demonstrated capability of physically active work installing posts and signs and walking up to 4 miles on coastal beaches to perform bird surveys and monitoring.  *Familiarity with coastal conservation lands of Sarasota County a plus.  *Must have a valid Florida driver’s license and a personal vehicle suited for transportation to complete assigned tasks.  *Must be able to work long days, weekends, and holidays as needed, in Florida summer field conditions.  *Interest in conservation and passion for the mission of the National Audubon Society a must.

VOLUNTEERS (8) - FIELD WORK ON TROPICAL BIRDS IN COLOMBIA

I am looking for driven and energetic students and researchers interested in working with tropical birds in Colombia. My project will take place between mid of April and late June 2017 at the Anchicayá that is located in the western slope of the western cordillera ~3 hour by car from Cali. The site covers an elevation gradient from 300-1100 m, and it is well preserve rainforest with close to 500 bird species reported for the site.
We have 8 volunteer positions available. Primary activities in this work include nest searching and monitoring. Additionally, we mist-netting and banding, and collection of samples from captured birds. We work six days a week approximately from 5am to 6pm, with occasional data entry and organization in the evenings. Mist-netting teams are expected to hike to and work in remote areas for up to two weeks at a time.
Field conditions are variable, depending on the field station to which assistants are assigned. In all cases, communication is reliable (mainly cell phone), and limited or no internet. We camp in tents for the entirety of the season and cook for ourselves (rice, pasta, legumes, cassava, plantain, and fresh vegetables). Field stations have reliable power or will have generator power on a nightly basis.
This work is most appropriate for those pursuing a career in ecology or behavior and who have previous field experience working in remote locations. There are often opportunities for students to develop thesis projects, and such students are strongly encouraged to apply.

Audubon Florida supports management of beach-nesting birds at many locations on the Gulf Coast and Northeast Atlantic Coast of Florida by surveying, posting, stewarding and protecting nesting areas from disturbance. To better monitor and protect the nesting shorebirds along beaches and other nest sites Audubon is hiring a seasonal Beach Anchor Steward to work at beach-nesting bird sites within Pinellas County, Florida. Sites most likely requiring stewardship include Fort Desoto County Park and St. Petersburg Beach. Nesting species may include American Oystercatcher, Wilson’s Plover, Least Tern, and Black Skimmer. The primary responsibility of the Anchor Steward is to organize and train volunteers in order to help monitor nesting birds and to conduct public outreach around the shore/seabird nesting areas.
This is a part-time, 20 hour per week, seasonal position focused on weekend days and holidays, including Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day, if nesting persists until the latter holiday. The position is expected to begin on March 20, 2017 and continue through the end of nesting season, to be determined in consultation with supervisor. Nesting may persist into August or early September but can end early in the event of a catastrophic event or other total loss of nesting activity.
Essential Functions: Under the direction of Audubon’s Project Manager for Pinellas Bird Stewardship, the South Pinellas County Anchor Steward will be responsible for the following tasks:   * Monitor nesting birds and conduct minimum weekly counts of nests, chicks, and fledged young of each nesting species and enter/report data in the Florida Shorebird Database as directed by the supervisor.  * Assist site managers and Audubon staff with installing symbolic fencing around new nest areas as needed.  * Conduct public outreach at nesting beaches on weekends and holidays generally between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Hours may run longer per day as needed and on holiday weekends.  * Assist with recruiting volunteers; train and schedule volunteers to chaperone nesting birds and conduct public outreach at nesting beaches on weekends and holidays.  * Work closely with site managers and Audubon staff, external partners, and volunteers in a positive and professional manner at all times.
Qualifications and Experience:  * Experience and ability with record-keeping and summarizing data for grant-required reports.  * Ability to recruit, train, support and schedule volunteers.  * Work well independently and with other staff and volunteers.  * A positive and diplomatic attitude is a must; strong verbal and written communication skills also essential.  * Demonstrated capability of physically active work walking on sandy beaches carrying field equipment during Florida summer field conditions. REGIONAL SHOREBIRD BIOLOGIST

Regional Shorebird Biologist - Southwest Florida – Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is seeking to hire a Regional Shorebird Biologist (Biological Scientist IV) for the southwest region of the state. This is one of several new positions in the agency associated with the inception of a statewide Shorebird Program. This individual will have the opportunity to shape and influence shorebird conservation in this large, biologically rich state. The agency is seeking candidates with a strong science background working with seabirds/shorebirds and professional experience designing and managing projects. Candidates with at least a Master’s degree will be given preference. The position requires someone who has strong people skills and an innate sense of diplomacy, but who is also intrepid and skilled in the field and in working with data. The position is grant funded, with current funding committed through 2020. However, we fully anticipate funding to continue beyond that timeframe. The position is OPS, meaning employees will have access to healthcare under the state system but there are no retirement benefits or paid leave. However, the work schedule and pay rate has been structured to account for holidays and some additional leave time. The rate of pay is $22/hour. The position is located in the Lakeland Regional Office.
Description of duties: Seeking a dedicated biologist with a strong background in shorebird and seabird (shorebird) conservation to serve as a Regional Shorebird Biologist for a 12-county region of southwest Florida. The primary responsibility of this position is implementing shorebird conservation actions locally, regionally, and in some cases, statewide:  • Work with local governments, landowners, and resource managers to improve conservation of shorebirds (habitat management, habitat creation, predator management, posting) through outreach, technical assistance, recognition, etc.;  • Work with partners to ensure high-priority sites are posted; Fill in monitoring gaps as needed.  • Monitor the Florida Shorebird Database during nesting season and communicate issues/deficiencies to the Partner Data Quality Manager;  • Work with partners to problem-solve controversial regional issues, especially those with potential regulatory consequences (fireworks, beach driving, local landowners protesting posting of nesting areas);  • Improve the effectiveness of law enforcement efforts by developing and delivering annual training to law enforcement staff;  • Engage in coastal engineering permitting issues, permit reviews, developing guidelines & conditions, improving permit compliance, and participating in relevant environmental commenting;  • Oversee the implementation of regional predation management including prioritization and contracting predator control agents;  • Provide scientific support and aid in implementation of statewide conservation initiatives such as the Florida Beaches Habitat Conservation Plan;  • Assist with the development of Biological Status Reviews and otherwise assist with the imperiled species listing process;  • Implement habitat management, creation, and restoration projects;  • Assist with shorebird research and survey projects;  • Be an active participant in regional partnership meetings and, where there is a leadership gap, serve as lead or co-lead.  • Participate in regional/national conservation efforts, partnerships, flyway-wide efforts.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: B.S. degree in wildlife or related natural resource management (M.S. preferred); a minimum of 3 years professional experience in similar field; shorebird/seabird conservation expertise; strong data management skills; strong communication skills; people-oriented, outgoing personality, highly diplomatic, enjoys engaging with partners and stakeholders; independent and self-directed; prefer candidates proficient in boating, trailer hauling, and ATV operation.

SEASONAL FIELD RESEARCH TECHNICIAN WITH SEABIRD RESTORATION PROJECT

The Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Oregon State University has an opening for a Field Technician position within the Pigeon Guillemot Restoration Project in Prince William Sound, Alaska. Studies will include on-colony behavioral and productivity observations, surveys to determine nesting distribution (using boats), and diet sampling to determine diet composition of nesting Pigeon Guillemots. This is an on-going project in collaboration with researchers from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and mink trappers from USDA Wildlife Services. LOCATION: Seasonal Field Technician positions to be based out of Anchorage, Alaska, but during the field season will live at a field camp on Naked Island in Prince William Sound, Alaska.
DATES: Full-time seasonal positions with anticipated starting date of May 1, 2017. Anticipated ending date is August 31. Work period may be extended beyond the anticipated end date as needed; flexibility on end date is desirable.

REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must possess and maintain a current, valid Driver’s License, and D.O.I. Motorboat Operators Certification Course (MOCC) Certificate (or be willing to obtain one). The seasonal technician will be employed through a temporary hiring agency and will be required to pass a background check.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should have a strong interest in avian ecology, feel comfortable working on small boats (current Department of Interior motor boat operator (MOCC) certification a plus), and be a good swimmer. Climbing experience is also preferred as the job may entail some repelling up to 100 feet. Preference will be given for knowledge of boat operation, seabird behavior, climbing experience, fish identification experience, live trapping, and possession of a bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Science or a related field.
DUTIES: Field technician positions require long hours of data collection, often in suboptimal conditions (wet, cold, and windy), with infrequent and irregular time off. The work is physically strenuous and involves crawling on knees, bending over or stooping, and sitting for extended periods of time using binoculars and spotting scopes. Repelling to nests using climbing equipment may also be required. All duties must be performed with a high degree of quality, uniformity, and timeliness. The employee must work as a team member and may be required to live and work in close quarters and in isolated settings for extended periods of time. In addition to the duties list above, all employees will be expected to assist with field site preparation and maintenance, which can be physically demanding at times.

NN is a Smithsonian avian ecology-based environmental outreach project which takes place in urban/suburban backyards and schoolyards in a growing number of regional locations in the U.S. It is a community-based research project and an opportunity to conduct basic conservation biology and environmental education. Resighting color banded birds, conducting point count censuses and vegetation sampling, sampling of blood, feather, and toenail tissues, as well as meticulous data entry also involved. The work requires an ability to work from early morning onward 6 days per week carrying out a wide variety of field tasks. Stand-out applicants will also have experience conducting public outreach activities, working cohesively as a crew member, and have a history of data entry accuracy.
The assistantship takes place mostly in backyards while communicating basic ecology to citizen participants. Multiple field technicians are needed to assist with eastern wild turkey research at James D. Martin Skyline WMA in northern Alabama from March 2017 to the end of October 2017. Responsibilities will include trapping, marking, and monitoring the survival and movements of turkeys in remote locations following detailed protocols; conducting camera, brood surveys for turkeys in undeveloped areas; maintaining and storing research equipment; constructing traps; and using 4-wheel drive vehicles to access remote locations. Other duties will include entering and proofing collected data on computers, and maintenance of field equipment including vehicles, electronic equipment, tools, traps and trap supplies. Survey efforts will require working long hours in variable field conditions (heat, humidity, snakes, insects, etc.) and living at remote field sites with limited amenities. Qualifications: Applicants should have a strong interest in wildlife management and previous experience working under field conditions. Candidates must have navigation skills using GPS to navigate roadless areas; ability to use radio-telemetry equipment and computers; and the ability to detect and identify turkey calls during gobble count surveys. Preference will be given to individuals with experience capturing, banding, and radio-tracking wild animals; ability to identify, and determine sex and age of wild turkey by sight. The position will run from late April through late June, 2017. Successful candidates must be able to attend a mandatory paid training from April 24th through April 29th . For candidates interested in a longer period of employment, survey work may be available as late as late July in other study areas and data entry and proofing work will likely be available through August. Upon the successful completion of training, technicians will work independently conducting bird surveys. The work schedule is typically 10 days on and 4 days off; however, alternative schedules may be considered on a case by case basis. Technicians must be able to identify all bird species found in Northern Arizona by sight and sound upon completion of training, and should expect to hike long distances off-trail in steep and rugged terrain on a regular basis. Conservian Bahamas April/May 2017 Live-aboard Schooner Expedition: Shorebird Habitat Conservation, Volunteer Shorebird Field Assistant with Scholarship- Bahamas Live-Aboard.  Conservian is seeking a few enthusiastic volunteer field assistants for our Bahamas shorebird habitat conservation project in April & May 2017 aboard our 75ft research schooner.
Field assistants will assist project director with daily project activities. The focus of the work is surveying for beach-nesting bird breeding pairs, nests, and young, and working with local volunteers to implement protective measures in the field. Focal species include Wilson’s Plovers, American Oystercatchers, Least Terns and other colonial nesting species. Assistants will record data on breeding pairs, habitat assessment, and human-created disturbance. Assistants will complete various data forms, perform data entry, and help director supervise field crew and local volunteers. Assistants will also assist director with daily planning/prep duties onboard the research schooner. This is an excellent opportunity to gain field experience and shorebird ID skills.
Trip cost for one week is $1,250 and includes your bunk, onboard meals, water, and ground transportation associated with project. Participants will fly to the Bahamas to designated airports for shuttle transport to schooner. A valid passport is required. Airfare and insurance are not included. NOTE: Scholarships are available for qualifying applicants to cover part of above live-aboard costs.
Project Summary: Conservian and partners will continue on-the-ground protective and restorative measures to limit human-caused disturbance, and control invasive Australian pine at key Piping Plover, shorebird, and seabird sites in the Bahamas. Field volunteers will participate in collecting new data on shorebirds and seabirds of the Bahamas. Selected sites include globally and locally Important Bird Areas and national parks of the Bahamas, such as Lucaya National Park IBA, Peterson Cay National Park IBA, Joulter Cays National Park IBA, and the Berry Islands, as well as additional key shorebird sites on Grand Bahama Island and Great Abaco.

Qualifications: Applicants must be responsible, adventurous, in good physical condition, enjoy working in teams and capable of walking several miles during warm weather in the Caribbean. Applicants must be comfortable living communally onboard a schooner and riding in small boats to access survey sites. RAPTOR COUNTERS AND COUNTER ASSISTANTS NEEDED

The Veracruz River of Raptors well known as the project that counts the biggest raptor migration corridor in the planet seeks hard core birders to help with the Fall migration count.
Both positions will be needed from August 15th till November 23rd.  Live one of the greatest raptor migration in the world in the well-known project Veracruz River of Raptors. Travel to this spectacular site and enjoy the wonder of birds and insects´ migration. You will also be able to learn about other resident and local birds. Interact with local people and local biologist´s and naturalist´s. You will also have the opportunity to approach the culture and of course the real Mexican food. We need raptor migration counters (3 positions) and assistants (2 positions) to work during 95 days at the Pronatura´s monitoring stations in the central coast of Veracruz Mexico where birds are funneled by the mountains to make this spectacular event. We are hiring enthusiastic and hard-working people with skills on identification and estimation of huge groups of raptors in stream lines, able to identify song birds and water birds at the two PRONATURA´s count sites (on average we count UP to 4 million raptors each fall plus passerines and water birds that make up to 300 thousands individuals). The peak days have over 200 000 individuals with record years having more than half million raptors in a single day!.
Three counter positions available.  Applicants should have a high background identifying and estimating migratory raptors and other groups in both long distance and close flights and have the responsibility of daily data entry in Pronatura´s data bases and Ebird when possible. Skills in raptor ID and other migrants and being able to interact with the public when needed.
Two Assistant positions, they should be good at taking notes (especially numbers) with good hand writing and be capable of identify migratory birds as well and able to learn how to identify raptors in flight, they must be willing to explain/interact with visitors about bird migration and the importance of birds and enter data into Ebird when possible.
We will select applicants that show a big interest on birds and with lot of birding experience, in particular thus that worked with migratory raptors are likely to be chosen.
The work of both (counters and assistants) consists of 2 days work and 1 day off and so on during the 95 day´s period, starting 9 am to 7 pm (10 hours per day) from August 18 to November 22.
All selected applicants will also help setting the count sites, and will help to clean and maintain working and living facilities in good and clean conditions, capture data in our databases and hawk-count when needed. They need to be comfortable working and sharing a room with other people, be flexible, very pro-active, and be comfortable working in small towns and rural conditions. Need to work in teams and be collaborative. Willing to help in other activities (like attending visitors, during our bird festival or in environmental education activities). Hot temperatures and mosquitoes are expected.
The site is located not too far from the ocean and the mountains where birding hot spots are available with more than 250 bird species, endemics such Mexican Sheartail Hummingbird, White-bellied Wren, lots of raptor species are near observation areas, we use to organize trips to the mangroves to get 5 species of King-fishers, Sungrebes, Black-collared Hawks, in the cloud forest we can see 3 species of toucans, Oropendolas, Motmots and many other species (look for info at Ebird.com about hot spots near Chichicaxtle). Also staff members are encourage to visit during their days off the Raptor Banding station where we trapped near 400 raptors each Fall.
The positions will be based in Chichicaxtle and Cardel, small towns of Veracruz.  Accommodation in rural conditions will be provided. Salary for counter position: $8,000 pesos (around 400 USD) to $9,000 Mexican pesos (aprox 450 USD), and for assistant’s $6,000 Mexican pesos (aprox 300 USD) to $8,000 Mexican Pesos (aprox 400 USD), all according to experience and skills, this is a life experience more than a job.  Selected people will cover their own transportation to Veracruz.  Medium knowledge of Spanish is required for both positions but we can be flexible according to experience.

CONSERVIAN/Coastal Bird Conservation is seeking one.  ch Ambassador/ Shorebird Monitor Volunteer intern for monitoring of beach-nesting birds and pubic beach use at Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores Alabama. Work begins in early April and continues through early August. Intern is required to commit 32 hours per week to Gulf State Park. Intern may work over 32 hours and qualify for hourly pay of $ 9.01.  Shared housing is provided.
The focus of the work is monitoring and protecting beach-nesting bird breeding pairs, nests, and young, including Snowy Plovers and Least Terns, and increasing public compliance with park rules and protective measures in place for beach-nesting birds. Intern will also engage in general education and monitoring of beach-going public. As a Beach Ambassador, intern will be provided a park utility vehicle (UTV) for beach patrolling. Additional security duties include monitoring the parking lot and beach for trash compliance, ensuring the safety of all beach patrons, contacting law enforcement in the event of emergencies, and ensuring that park patrons are in compliance with Alabama State Park 220 Laws. Intern will record data on breeding, beach-nesting bird pairs, habitat assessment, and public compliance, erect and maintain posting and signing to protect nesting areas, keep organized field notes, complete various data forms and perform regular data entry using Excel. Intern will report to and work cooperatively with Conservian Shorebird Assistant and Gulf State Park Supervisor. Training will be provided prior to beginning these job duties. Intern will also have opportunities to work with Conservian field staff at other shorebird sites in Alabama.
Requirements: Applicant must be self-motivated, responsible, in good physical condition, and enjoy working in warm summer temperatures on the Gulf Coast. Shorebird familiarity and experience working with the public is preferred. UTV certification and shorebird monitoring training is provided. VOLUNTEER FIELD ASSISTANT - LOVELY FAIRY-WREN, AUSTRALIA

We are looking for one field assistant to help monitor a colour-banded population of Lovely fairy-wrens in Cairns, Queensland, Australia, for a research project on female ornamentation from University of Melbourne.
Time period: From August 25th to 25th September 2017. Starting/ending date can be adjusted but needs to be around this time. Assistant is expected to stay a full month.
Location: Cairns region, Queensland, Australia. We will be based in Cairns city but travel to several sites in the area.   The applicant will have the opportunity to enjoy the unique wildlife of North Queensland and leisure time to visit Cairns, the Great Barrier Reef or the world heritage rainforests.
Duties: Censusing of colour-banded birds, searching for and monitoring nests, banding nestlings, behavioural observations while following birds, assisting in behavioural experiments and target mist-netting. After fieldwork video/photo analysis, data entry and other computer activities will occur. Working days are long, with early starts, six days a week. Enthusiasm, self-motivation and organisation, and a strong work ethic are a must.
Qualifications: Experience resighting colour-banded birds, following birds in dense canopy, nest-searching, bird handling skills, mist-netting, banding and behavioural observations. Must also be early riser, physically fit, able to work in extreme weather conditions (hot, humid, and occasional tropical rain), maintain a positive attitude and enjoy shared living conditions. Good knowledge of English is a requirement.
Compensation: Free onsite accommodation is provided, but assistants cover travel to Cairns and their own food costs. The project will reimburse up to AUD$750 for the month towards receipted food and travel expenses (including airfare) to Cairns.
