POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER - Bird and bat occupancy and occurrence modeling.
We are seeking a motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate to conduct a study of bat and bird occupancy and movement in Northern California Sierra Nevada forests. The work is aimed at a suite of bats and at California Spotted Owls and Northern Goshawks. The postdoc will engage in all aspects of the ongoing study, and complete the synthesis for sensitive species from the region. Many of the data already are in-hand and they will be used to develop spatially explicit models and to evaluate factors with potential to influence future populations and management. Work will be conducted in collaboration with USDA National Forest biologists, students, and the Audubon Society and we anticipate a rapid series of influential publications. Research salary, benefits, and field operations are funded for approximately one year, with potential for extension. On-site or remote working arrangements are both acceptable. Role Description: The Development and Marketing Director reports to and works closely with Bird Rescue’s Executive Director. He or she is responsible for achieving annual fundraising and integrated marketing goals in what is an established organization that has a long track record and is poised for change and growth. The Development and Marketing Director also works closely with the Board of Directors, senior management, volunteers, and consultants to develop and achieve Bird Rescue’s fundraising and marketing goals.
Responsibilities and Duties:

AVIAN BIOLOGIST

Westwood has an opening for an avian biologist for a proposed wind project in Ward County, North Dakota beginning in mid-April 2017 and continuing through April 2018. The work will be intermittent with approximately 25-30 hours every other week, with no work scheduled between weeks. During the beginning of the survey season from late April through May the work is expected to exceed 40 hours per week. There is a possibility for further work beyond this term.
Primary duties will include conducting general avian point count surveys, grassland breeding bird surveys, eagle point count surveys, and aerial and ground-based raptor nest surveys. Applicants should have demonstrable experience conducting bird surveys and must be proficient at identifying birds by both site and sound. B.S. or M.S. degree in biology preferred. Candidates with prior experience conducting avian surveys for wind energy projects will be given preference. The applicant must be able to work independently and interact with project managers, technicians, and landowners. Use of personal vehicle will be required and mileage reimbursement will be paid for personal vehicle use.

SPRING SEASONAL BANDING ASSISTANT

Experience with Eastern birds is most useful, but other North American banders welcome. Extra consideration will be given to applicants that enjoy teaching visitors of all ages about birds. POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN GLOBAL CHANGE AND SPATIAL MODELING OF DESERT ENDOTHERMS

A postdoctoral position to work on the development and implementation of physiological-based, spatial models of desert endotherms is available at UC Berkeley in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy & Management (ESPM) and the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology (MVZ). The position is associated with the Grinnell Resurvey Project under the direction of Professor Steve Beissinger. This project is funded by NSF to resample Mojave Desert vertebrates (birds and mammals) to understand how climate change and anthropogenic factors have affected species’ turnover during the past century. The project includes collaborators in the University of New Mexico (Blair Wolf), UC Santa Cruz (Barry Sinervo), and the San Diego Natural History Museum.  This position will require extensive development spatial models of species distributions that mechanistically link physiological-based and climate-based approaches. Familiarity with use of multispecies occupancy models to draw inferences on species and community change is also desirable.
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:   **A doctoral degree in a relevant subject   **Profound skills in spatial modeling and GIS   **Strong experience in statistical modelling including Bayesian methods   **Advanced knowledge in R and additional programming languages   **Strong record including scientific publications   **Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

FIELD ASSISTANT IN AVIAN BEHAVIORAL ECOLOGY

AVIAN FIELD ASSISTANTS needed to study the breeding strategy of Hair-crested Drongo (Dicrurus hottentottus) in central China. This project is focus on the trade-off for males between providing parental care and pursuing extra-pair matings. The assistants will work with a postdoc from Sun Yat-sen University who got his PhD degrees at University of Groningen and Beijing Normal University. Duties will include nest searching, mist-netting and banding birds, blood sampling, manipulating the condition of parenting birds, behavior observation and record, as well as any other works involved in the field. Previous experience with birds is preferred and basic training such as mist-netting and bird banding will also be provided. Personal study project that under the general project is supported. Volunteers are expected to spend near three months (at least from the middle of May to late July) on the work, have strong interest in avian behavior, physically fit and be willing to work for long and irregular time in the field, and share rooms with others. All expenses in China during work period (i.e. housing, foods, and local travels, etc) will be covered, but there is no salary, and the assistants are responsible for their travel to and from China. Volunteers will have opportunities to learn avian field research skills, see many Chinese endemic bird species (for example Reeves's Pheasant), and experience the Chinese tradition and culture.

MIGRATION MONITORING ASSISTANT

Hands on training is provided. Chores undertaken by all include data input, some cooking, station maintenance and camaraderie. The two migration seasons take place from late April to early June and from late July until the end of October.

SHOREBIRD-HUMAN DISTURBANCE RESEARCH TECHNICIAN

Volunteer activities: These assistants will be quickly trained to identify all the local parrots by sight and become experts at clay lick monitoring and macaw nest observation with video camera systems (Nov – Mar). Due to the short length of stay, volunteers will have only minimal involvement in activities requiring higher training levels like parrot censuses and tree climbing. Assistants will also help with data entry.
Qualifications: (1) Some background knowledge of birds in general. (2) Good sense of observing animals, (3) Capacity of stay seated for long periods of time, (4) Some knowledge of Spanish (not required but helpful).

AVIAN POINT-COUNT TECHNICIAN (Montana)

AVIAN POINT-COUNT TECHNICIANS (7) needed for a study of breeding landbirds in the mountains, forests, and riparian habitats of northwestern Montana (mid-May – mid-July) with the Intermountain Bird Observatory at Boise State University. Work will be conducted specifically in the Kootenai and Flathead National Forests.  This is very rugged, remote and challenging terrain.  Duties consist of standardized point count surveys, vegetation surveys and data entry using Integrated Monitoring in Bird Conservation Regions (IMBCR) protocol. Technicians will travel across diverse habitats identifying hundreds of bird species.
Qualifications include: 1) the ability to identify 200+ species of Western birds by sight and primarily by sound 2) ability to work independently (alone =90% of the time) for the duration of the field season 3) strong physical/mental endurance to complete 1 survey per day per 10-day hitch 4) ability to navigate off-trail in remote, densely-vegetated, steep and rugged landscapes using topographical maps and GPS units 5) willingness to work in landscapes occupied by apex predators (bears, mountain lions and rattlesnakes) 6) and careful and accurate data collection/entry/management.  Multi-day, solo backpacking trips may be required.  Technicians must provide their own backpacking/camping gear.  Each applicant must possess strong interpersonal skills in order to communicate and work effectively with private landowners, fellow technicians and the program manager.
This is a fulltime position for the duration of the project (May-July). Hourly pay rate is $12-$14+/hr DOE (PLUS a per Diem which amounts to an additional $1,000 over the season).  Surveying requires EXTENSIVE DRIVING between sites on both paved and dirt roads. Technicians must have a valid driver's license and EITHER use their personal 4WD vehicle (work-related mileage will be reimbursed at the standard state rate) OR IBO can provide a rental SUV.

AVIAN GEOLOCATOR FIELD CREW LEADER

The Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center and Cornell Lab of Ornithology seek a lead field technician to assist with deployment of light-level geolocators on southeastern Painted Buntings. This is a multi-year project focused on determine the migration routes and winter distribution of this species. During the 2017 breeding season, 100 geolocators will be deployed at 4 sites along the southeastern US coast (FL, GA, SC, & NC). The lead field technician will oversee deployment of geolocators at each site. The position will involve mist-netting, banding birds, and attachment of geolocators using standard leg-harness techniques. Demonstrated experience with geolocator attachment (or attachment of similar tags using leg harness technique) is required. In addition to the field work, the lead technician will supervise one additional field assistant and will coordinate the day-to-day logistics to insure that tags are deployed in a timely manner at each site.
Qualifications: Applicants must have prior experience with attachment of light-level geolocators (or similar tags) using the leg harness technique. Experience managing avian banding projects, including overseeing field crews, a valid drivers license, and demonstrated ability to work effectively independently is preferred.
Compensation is $500/week + housing.

AVIAN POINT-COUNT BIOLOGIST

Point Counts at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, 2017 – We seek two (2) motivated, enthusiastic biologists with prior point counting experience to conduct point counts at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
Project dates: This position begins on May 1 and runs through June 16, for a total of 7 weeks of surveys.
Responsibilities: Working as a team, the two biologists will conduct point count surveys beginning at dawn and continuing for 3-4 hours. Biologists are also responsible for all project data entry. Point counts will be conducted Monday through Friday, weather permitting.
Requirements: Biologists must be experienced point counters and be able to identify the birds of Eastern North America by sight and sound. Biologists must be in good physical condition, comfortable hiking short to moderate distances, and must possess basic navigation and orienteering abilities in open pine forest and woodland. Successful applicants should know how to read maps, use a GPS unit and a compass, and be familiar with data entry software such as Microsoft Access. Also important is the ability to get along with a teammate in remote areas, and the ability to face the challenges of fieldwork in this location, including (but not limited to) early mornings, occasional rain, very hot temperatures, and an abundance of ticks. Biologists must also be able to be flexible with their schedules, as point count locations and timing may change based on scheduled burning and army activities occurring on the base.
Compensation: $4500 for 7 weeks of work. Shared housing and a project vehicle will be provided.

VOLUNTEER AVIAN FIELD ASSISTANT

The statewide TED Program consists of 10 professional staff and works proactively with state, federal, NGO and private partners to conserve wildlife species (especially nongame species) before they become threatened or endangered, to recover species already imperiled, and to keep \"common species common.\" The incumbent has oversight of coordination of the State of Alaska's work under the Endangered Species Act and has primary oversight over the Division's portion of the State Wildlife Grants program. This includes administering budgets that are complex and require matching funds. The incumbent will directly supervise 6 professional staff located in Juneau, Anchorage and Fairbanks.  The TED Program is instrumental in implementing Alaska's State Wildlife Action Plan and representing Alaska's nongame interests at the Pacific Flyway Council's Nongame Technical Committee.
