I Am Not A Security Expert (I just listen to Steve Gibson's "Security
Now!" podcasts), but it seems to me that until recently TrueCrypt was
the go-to product for this sort of thing. You can use TrueCrypt to
make encrypted volumes that appear as ordinary files on your drive
until you mount them as a drive. But now the TrueCrypt folks have
disappeared, and they themselves steer everyone to Microsoft Bitlocker.
