Dharma on Cmpus

*Dharma Talks and 2-Day Meditation Retreat by Ven. Guo Xing Fashi *
*from April 25th-27th in Ann Arbor and Lansing, Michigan*
To promote authentic Buddha Dharma and Chan meditation practice, Ven. Guo
Xing Fa Shi will give Dharma talks and lead a two-day meditation retreat
from April 25th-27th in Ann Arbor and Lansing, Michigan. These Dharma
events are co-sponsored by Dharma Drum Mountain Michigan Chapter, Ann Arbor
Buddhist Society, Dharma on Campus, and Lansing Buddhist Association.
Born in Taiwan in 1953, Ven. Guo Xing Fa Shi was ordained as a monk in 1986
by the late internationally renowned Chan Master Sheng-yen. Ven. Guo Xing
Fa Shi is also one of Master Sheng-yen’s Dharma heirs. He had assisted the
Master in leading meditation retreats in Taiwan, Southeast Asia, and the
United States, for a period of 20 years, totaling over more than 50
retreats. The Venerable has served in various posts and offices in the
Dharma Drum Mountain organization, including meditation counselor at Nung
Chan Monastery in Taiwan, guiding instructor at Dharma Drum Sangha
University, and director of Dharma Drum Mountain’s Chan Hall. Currently he
is a resident teacher and abbot of Chan Meditation Center and Dharma Drum
Retreat Center in New York. He has travelled in Canada and the US to give
Dharma talks and lead meditation retreats. Guo Xing Fa Shi is a friendly
and accessible Chan Buddhist teacher. Wherever he goes, he is well liked by
all that meet him.
For this Dharma trip, Ven. Guo Xing Fa Shi will give a Dharma talk in
English in Ann Arbor and lead a two-day Silent Illumination meditation
retreat at Amitabha Village Retreat Center in Perry, Michigan. The practice
of Silent Illumination was created by Master Hongzhi, a renowned Chan
master of the Caodong school of Zen Buddhism in the 12th century.
Master Sheng-yen,
himself trained in the Caodong lineage, had given new life to the long-lost
method of Silent Illumination and dedicated to promoting the method.
"Silently and serenely, forgetting all words, clearly and vividly, it
appears before you."
The above verse comes from "The Inscription on Silent Illumination," a poem
composed by Master Hongzhi Zhengjue. This verse is a guideline for silent
illumination. With this simple method, one cultivates relaxation and
awareness of the state of body, mind, and environment. With the settling of
wandering thoughts and conceptualization, there is "silence"; with the
emergence of clarity, there is "illumination."
In this two-day meditation retreat, Ven. Guo Xing Fa Shi will lead us in
understanding the concepts and applying the method of Silent Illumination.
He will also give personal interviews to participants to provide additional
guidance. Both beginners and experienced practitioners will definitely
benefit from the teachings of Ven. Guo Xing Fa Shi. The public is
cordially invited.
On his visit Ven. Guo Xing will offer:
