Title: Termination of Analog Cable Television Service on Campus
Status: Closed
Resolution: On Aug. 7, the Telecommunication Systems department in
Infrastructure Planning and Facilities terminated the legacy analog
television service on campus.
What does this mean?
Most televisions on campus are digital televisions and were not be
impacted by this change.
As of Aug. 7:
¢ The free digital Instructional Television (ITV) tier (digital
channels 18-22) are still available, along with the pay-for digital
Entertainment Television (ETV) tier (digital channels 24-30). Services
were not impacted for customers with access to these digital channels
prior to the change.
¢ Analog channels (2-18) are no longer available. The content that
was found in channels 2-18 has been, and is still, available in
digital format on channels 18.1 " 22.6. A digital television or an
analog television with a converter box that is capable of receiving
digital "ClearQAM" programming is required to view any of the campus
cable channels. The cable lineup can be viewed on the Cable TV web
pages in the "Cable TV information" section.
¢ Older "cable-ready" analog televisions will need a converter box in
order to watch the digital programming. In many cases it may be
cheaper to purchase a digital television. Information on converter
boxes can be found on the Cable TV web pages in the "Cable TV
information" section.
What steps should the cable customer take?
Customers should rescan their televisions to receive all of the
available programming on the campus cable system. For more information
on rescanning your television, go to the IPF Cable TV page for
students in the "How to hook up your television" section.
Why is this happening?
This is the last phase of a project that started in 2009 to convert
the cable television network to an all-digital system. This change is
in response to industry and technology changes. Digital cable
television offers crystal-clear, high-definition programming and
allows MSU to expand content offered in the future. Analog televisions
have not been available for sale since 2008.
