Hi Everyone,
Probably you already know to avoid these, but just to make sure
you do not get cheated by these, here is a warning.
We are seeing again a string of Emails, usually in the name of
someone you know claiming that the sender was traveling
someplace and has had some problem such as losing their walet
or getting robbed or today I saw one claiming they got attacked
by gunmen from some rebel group.
These Emails say they have lost their credit cards and money and ask
for help getting back to the USA or paying hotel bills or something
like that.
These are all fake and are attempts to get you to either send money
or personal information to them so they can steal money from your
accounts or steal your identity. Each scam is a little different
but all are false and will try to rob you.
The person whose name is being used to send the message is NOT
the one sending them. The criminals have stolen or faked the
account, possibly by getting the password or in more cases, just
putting false Email headers on the messages.
The best thing you can do is to make sure you do not respond
to those messages and especially do not give them any information.
You can report them to the MSU Help desk in the Computer Center
or to the police, but there is very little they can do to catch
the criminals. The messages often originate in different countries.
But, they could possibly help track down the person whose Email
account was hijacked and get them to change passwords, etc.
Good luck and stay safe,
////jerry
