For federal return it takes 5 calendar years to be considered as a resident
(I think J and H visas have less than 5). For 2012's return, those five
year are 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008. So if you came to the US on or
before Dec-31-2007 you will have to use resident return form.
For state, you can also claim non resident by submitting a non resident
schedule, but I don't think it will make any difference in the refund if
you spent the whole year in Michigan - I did it in the past just to be
safe. It is mainly designed for people who moved from/to other state(s)
during the year.
