Dear Colleagues:

We wish to extend a strong invitation to you to submit proposals to and attend the Strategic Management Society (SMS) Special Conference on "Competing and Cooperating in and for China" in Guangzhou, China during December 14-16, 2012. In partnership with and hosted by Sun Yat-Sen Business School (SYSBS), Sun Yat-Sen University, China (http://bus.sysu.edu.cn/EN/), this special conference will provide a platform to bring strategy, management and business scholars and practitioners together to discuss and develop strategies for how local and foreign firms can compete and cooperate within China and within the international market.

Attached please find the updated Call for Papers for the main conference on December 15-16, 2012. For details, please visit the conference website (http://china.strategicmanagement.net). Focusing on "Competing and Cooperating in and for China," this conference will offer an excellent opportunity for scholars interested in China business and strategy to co-learn and co-develop winning strategies, emerging theories, research methods, and policy suggestions on how firms, domestic and foreign, should develop and adapt their strategies in order to achieve sustainable competitive advantage in the marketplace they compete. The main conference will be featured with several plenary panels covering competing in and for China, collaborative strategies in and for China, corporate governance and executive leadership in and for China, what's next for strategic management research in China, and innovation strategy in China. Panelists will include Jay Barney, Garry Bruton, Sea-Jin Chang, Ming-Jer Chen, Mike Hitt, Haiyang Li, Yuan Li, Neng Liang, Yadong Luo, Marjorie Lyles, Shige Makino, Sam Park, Laura Poppo, Justin Tan, Steen Thomsen, Tony Tong, Anja Tuschke, Margarethe Wiersema, and George Yip, among others. The conference will also have an executive session consisting of panelists and speakers from large Chinese companies and foreign multinationals competing and cooperating in China.

Preceding the main conference, the PDW workshop, chaired by Haiyang Li at Rice and Eric Tsang at UT Dallas, will be held on the campus of SYSBS on December 14, 2012 (see the PDW Call for Papers on the conference website). This workshop will provide advice to junior scholars and doctoral students who currently research China-related strategy, international business and entrepreneurship topics and wish to publish in international journals. Specifically, the workshop will provide participants with developmental feedback on their current research projects in round-table sessions with internationally renowned scholars (e.g., Garry Bruton, Tailan Chi, Michael Hitt, Stephen Tallman, and Margarethe Wiersema, to name a few). These scholars will also share their insights into publishing journal papers, identifying research topics, selecting research methods, and framing research ideas. Meanwhile, participants will have the chance of meeting editors of major journals in strategic management (including SMJ, GSJ, AMJ, AMP, and AMR). Another objective of the workshop is to promote and strengthen ties between Chinese (or China-based) and international researchers. The workshop is structured to provide lots of opportunities for interactions between junior and senior scholars through faculty panels and round-table sessions.

We also acknowledge the support of several co-sponsors for this conference, such as the Australian School of Business and Jilin University School of Management. We believe this conference will be an exciting and enriching event to attend. We hope you do too and look forward to seeing you in Guangzhou, China!

Sincerely,

Program Co-Chairs: Yan (Anthea) Zhang (Rice), Jeffrey Reuer (Purdue), Shujun Zhang (Sun Yat-Sen Business School)

Conference Convenors: Ming-Jer Chen (U. of Virginia) and Yadong Luo (U. of Miami)
