>> The office of Education& Outreach (E&O) at the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) in Boulder, Colorado, seeks an individual to develop and implement the concept of the “Community Learning Lab,” a program of educational research and practical application that leverages the activities of E&O to understand and document the conceptions, barriers, affordances and effective strategies for teaching content and processes related to the atmospheric, computational and solar sciences. Evaluation of new and existing resources and programs should be integrated into this overall research program.
>>
>> This individual will serve as a member of the senior management team. Works with E&O Office staff to continually align overall activities with the strategic plan and measure progress toward the goals articulated in the plan. Contributes to the revisions of the strategic plan as needed. Helps define an atmospheric sciences education research agenda that addresses national needs; leverages UCAR resources and programs; engages university, UCAR, and NCAR partners; and informs all activities within E&O. Designs and implements the evaluation of specific programs or resources to guide and improve E&O activities while also serving to advance the scholarly understanding. Specific activities will include evaluation of web-based resources, exhibits, in-person activities, internship experiences, as both stand-alone elements and as complementary experiences. Advises on the development of resources and programs to facilitate educational research and responds to up-to-date knowledge and needs in the field.

>> Works with E&O content developers to help to design and build high-quality, educational resources for K-12 audiences, the public, and K-12 teachers, in a variety of media and settings. Current development efforts include web-based interactivities, multi-media touch-screens, in-person explorations, internships, exhibits, etc. As the learning lab grows, the time spent on content development will decrease.

>> Requires a Ph.D. in a UCAR/EO-related science field or science education and two or more years’ experience leading discipline-based science education research projects, or equivalent, including a Bachelor’s degree in a UCAR-related science. Must have a record of publication in science-education related to the geosciences and a record of successful grants for science education research related to the geosciences. Requires skill in the design, execution and evaluation of education programs and knowledge of pedagogy appropriate to K-12 students and teachers.

>> Must be familiar with web2.0 technologies and their best use in educational settings and have experience in managing projects and teams, especially the ability to lead in a collaborative environment and work with team-members outside the direct chain of command. Requires excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to convey complex technical or pedagogical concepts clearly and concisely to non-expert colleagues and ability to work with students and professionals from all backgrounds and with diverse gender and affectional orientations. Must be able to represent E&O projects and goals internally and externally and be able to travel as needed.
