/The Office of Faculty and Organizational Development is currently
inviting applications for the Walter and Pauline Adams Academy for
Instructional Excellence and Innovation. Please forward to fixed-term
faculty, continuing appointment librarians, or academic specialists who
might be interested. /

*The Walter and Pauline Adams Academy for Instructional Excellence and
Innovation, now inviting applications for its fourth cohort*, provides a
cross-disciplinary cohort of instructors (fixed-term faculty, fixed-term
National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory systems faculty,
fixed-term Health Programs faculty, fixed-term or continuing appointment
librarians, and academic specialists) with opportunities to further
their development as excellent teachers whose instructional decisions
are rooted in the robust research literature on effective teaching and
learning. To this end, the Academy provides members with venues to
explore the scholarship on effective practices on University teaching
and learning, and to participate in a community of teacher-scholars.
This Academy is named in honor of former MSU President Walter Adams and
Pauline Adams, his wife and MSU faculty emerita, who were committed to
promoting instructional excellence throughout their careers. A maximum
of fifteen Adams Academy members will be selected for the 2011-2012
cohort. Criteria for selection include evidence of the applicant’s
interest in and commitment to teaching and student learning, potential
to be an excellent teacher, and willingness to advocate for good
teaching among his/her peers. The Adams Academy will be facilitated by
Eron Drake, Director of Faculty and Instructional Development Programs
in the Office of Faculty and Organizational Development.

·Academy applicants must plan to teach one or more courses or have other
instruc­tional responsibilities during his/her participation in the Academy.

·Academy members will attend monthly cohort seminars one Tuesday a month
(September-April) from 2:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. that explore teaching and
learning topics to be decided by Adams Academy members. Each seminar
will have required and optional readings and preparatory activities with
three to five hours of preparation per month. The 2011-2012 meeting
dates are as follows: *September 13, October 11, November 8, December 6,
January 17, February 14, March 13, and April 10*

·Academy members will be expected to attend at least four Lilly Teaching
Seminars, Spring Institute on College Teaching and Learning workshops,
or other campus instructional development activities of their choice
throughout the academic year.

·The cohort will discuss possible additional activities based on the
group’s interests.

*Eligibility:*Both full-time and part-time fixed-term faculty,
continuing appointment librarians, and academic specialists who will
have instructional responsibilities as part of their appointments in
2011-2012 are invited to apply for the Walter and Pauline Adams Academy
for Instructional Excellence and Innovation. All appli­cants must be in
at least the third year of their appointment or have worked for MSU for
at least three years.
