Good Morning Specialists,
Academic Specialists are intentionally in the position of academic
specialists. We are not in a holding pattern waiting and hoping to become
faculty. The collective contributions we make are critical to the mission
of the university and are made by no other employee group, including
faculty. The challenge for our community, however, is not to be overlooked
or exploited in a system where we are not part of the voting governance
system or in a formal employee group - administration relationship
(union/management relationship). With weak budget forecasts, mounting
health care costs, and relationships with a new union emerging, the next few
years could present complex challenges to the Specialist community. As
Michigan's economy struggles and solutions to structural state funding
problems and inequities seem trapped in ever more bitter cycles of
partisanship politics, it becomes increasing important to ensure that our
voice does not get lost in University-wide conversations. The Academic
Specialist Advisory committee is the primary advocacy vehicle for our
community. Please consider joining us in this endeavor by nominating
yourself to run for election to ASAC. Details are outlined below and in the
two attachments.
Thanks,
Bob Brown
