Dear Susan,
My graduate students are looking for an economic faculty member contact in Puerto Rico who can discuss what that country is doing on coastal management strategies particularly as they relate to major events like hurricanes. I hope WAIB can help. The description of the research is below. I would like to know what you think, and which is the best venue to use to get the word out.
Thanks,
Joan

Here is an excerpt from the research description (letter). Does this help, or do you need more specifi information?
Anyone who has an economic perspective on any of these elements would be a valuable contact.
"Our research includes a comprehensive evaluation of the strategies put in place before Hurricane Ike struck landfall September 13th, 2008, in comparison to strategies of similar purpose on the island of Puerto Rico. The diversity in culture between the two geographic locations, coupled with the common challenge of reducing the impact of events (such as a hurricane) will lead to a synergistic dialogue in policy and coastal management strategy. This research compliments the wetlands proposal drafted by MARM students for Galveston City Council member Karen Mahoney during the Fall 2008 semester. Council woman Mahoney is using the proposal to support her efforts to substantiate the need for a wetlands ordinance.
The examination of coastal management strategies includes the following elements:
Energy supply, coastal erosion, beach re-nourishment, ocean level rising, emergency management, recovery and restoration, water supply, legal aspects, subsidence, windstorm/flood insurance, waste disposal, drainage, non-point source pollution of coastal waters, air pollution, and transportation."
We have a contact in policy, I am really looking towards an economist that can tie in the complexities and the "ripple effects".
Thank you

Give me a specific write-up on the study, who you want to see and why and I will find you someone.

Good Morning,
I am coordinating the trip for approximately 10 MARM students. We are traveling to Puerto Rico this July.
Right now I am establishing contacts on the island. Since you are the professor who is familiar with our scope of studies, and most likely to understand who may be able to tie in the economic factors, I am hoping you have contacts in Puerto Rico that might be able to help us address the economic side of our studies.
The economic strategies surrounding fisheries, coastal zone management, wetlands mitigation, and recovery from marine events (hurricanes, for example), are just a few of the issues that we are examining.
Any assistance you may be able to provide would be wonderful. :)
Thank you!
