CIVIL RIGHTS COMMISSION POSTPONED
The Civil Rights Commission had planned Monday to approve a report to
Governor Jennifer Granholm on the affects of the Michigan Civil Rights
Amendment on state statute and programs, but the meeting was canceled
Monday morning for lack of a quorum.
Department of Civil Rights officials said commissioners had unexpected
schedule changes that left the commission without a quorum but were
hoping to reschedule the meeting next week. Ms. Granholm had given the
commission until February 6 to issue the report.
Commissioners and department officials were holding the report very
close to the vest until its release, arguing there could be changes
requested at the meeting. Those who have seen the report indicated it
is a large report and comprehensive, indicating the commission sees more
effects from the amendment than were expected in preliminary reviews by
the Law Review Commission, which is also exploring the issue. The Law
Review Commission has not yet completed its work on the issue.
