Dear WAIB members:
A follow-up on WAIB President Lyn Amine's email about elections for WAIB
officer positions. I will be running the nominations for, and election
of, WAIB officers this year so am establishing the following timetable
and procedures:
1. Please submit all nominations, including self-nominations to me by
email at [log in to unmask], no later than Friday June 17, 2005. I will
declare nominations CLOSED as of that date.
2. Please include in your nomination email a one-paragraph bio of the
individual. That bio will be attached to the election ballot.
3. I will email WAIB-L the list of nominees to the membership during the
following week. That list will also be posted on the WAIB website for
those without email access.
4. I will do an electronic ballot of the membership. This year, given my
limited expertise with electronic voting, I will ask you to simply REPLY
to my email by putting an X by the candidates you support and emailing
it back to me. Anyone without email access can fax their votes to me at
979-845-9641. All WAIB members in good standing are eligible to vote. I
will declare the voting CLOSED as of July 4, 2005.
5. Election results will be based on who receives the largest number of
votes cast for a particular officer position. Winners of the election
will be informed ASAP. Results of the election will be announced to the
general membership at the breakfast meeting of WAIB in Quebec City.
6. Some questions that arisen re nominations:
a) Do I have to attend the AIB meetings?
Please note that the next two meetings of the AIB (which would coincide
with the term of the newly elected WAIB executive) will be in Beijing,
China, and in Indianapolis, USA. Some potential nominees have asked
whether or not they would need to attend the AIB meetings, given the
likely cost of the China conference, and the difficulty of non-US
residents from some countries in coming to the United States. We have
discussed this at the WAIB executive level and think that a person
elected to WAIB office should attend the AIB meetings if at all
possible, but would not be required to do so. The bulk of the work of
the WAIB Executive takes place outside of the meetings (e.g., WAIB
sessions on the program, fundraising, updating the WAIB website,
updating the WAIB Directory, and so on). If a WAIB officer cannot attend
a particular AIB meeting, we think that they should arrange for someone
(e.g., a previous WAIB officer) to attend in their place. As long as
there are a couple of WAIB officers at the AIB meetings, we should be
"good to go". So, if you would like to be a WAIB officer but do not plan
to attend one of the two upcoming AIB meetings, or you know someone else
in that position, do not let this be a deterrent - do go ahead and
nominate that someone (with their permission, of course) or yourself.
Please signal in your email, however, that you cannot attend the AIB
meeting in ......... (This avoids having a slate where none of the
officers can attend a particular conference).
b) If I run for the member-at-large position, do I have to be a
webmaster?
At present, we have a wonderful webmaster, Beckie LeFlore in the Texas
A&M CIBER, and the WAIB website is hosted by the TAMU CIBER. All members
of the WAIB executive give materials to Beckie, who "cleans them up" and
posts them on the website. Therefore, there is no need at present for
anyone other than Beckie to actually host the website, do the HTML, and
so on. Beckie will be retiring from CIBS at the end of 2005, but we hope
to persuade her to stay on as webmaster. If she chooses to step down, we
will look for someone else to be the formal webmaster and host for the
website. (This would be an additional ex-officio WAIB position, as
Beckie's position is now.) In sum, no, you do not have to be a
webmaster.
7. Other questions - If you have another other questions, please email
me directly at [log in to unmask] or email Lyn Amine at [log in to unmask]
Thanks! Looking forward to seeing everyone in Quebec City.
best wishes, Lorraine Eden (WAIB Founder)
