Just a thought, perhaps the university could consider offering departing non-retirees continued access to "their" mail account for a month per year of service? Presuming of course that the departure was on good terms.

Under the Technology Guarantee, MSU offers students continued use of
their e-mail accounts for two years after the date of graduation. In
practice, e-mail accounts for others no longer affiliated with the
university may not be immediately expired, but one should not count on
