In coordination with the Volunteer Manager and Biological Technicians, coordinate the work of as many as six volunteer coordinators that aid in monitoring activities at sites across the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Cooperatively work with program staff to develop and implement a volunteer training program focused on proper monitoring, stewardship, and habitat management protocols. With technicians, maintain vehicles and all assigned field gear. Program Development Work with program staff to develop and implement goals and plans for the program. Assist Program Manager with pursuing funding opportunities. Cultivate and maintain productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders including other Audubon offices and chapters, state and federal agencies, other non-governmental organizations, and community and government leaders. Assist state, regional, and national communication and outreach staff to develop and deliver compelling messages, releases, publicity and reporting about the project, both verbally and in writing.  Qualifications: Master’s degree or higher in Ornithology, Avian Ecology, Biology, Natural Sciences, or related field required; equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of education. 5+ years of applied field science experience is required, with demonstrated success with bird monitoring including point and transect counts and nest searches; 3-5 years experience managing staff and/or volunteers. Demonstrated experience in survey design and proven experience using statistical techniques for analyzing bird data (eg. distance sampling, capture-mark-recapture, other demographic modeling approaches, spatial and movement analyses, etc). Knowledge in the identification and ecology of a variety of waterbirds: wading birds, shorebirds, seabirds, waterfowl and marshbirds as well as passerines, raptors, and other species that may utilize the littoral coastal zone. Working knowledge of coastal and estuarine habitats including coastal wetlands, dredge-spoil, sandy beach, etc, Northern Gulf Coast, a plus. Demonstrated knowledge of bird monitoring protocols and methods for recording, assessment, and reporting of monitoring data, including the use of electronic reporting portals (eBird). Demonstrated success in managing volunteers. Demonstrated ability to partner with key stakeholders, such as community and agency personnel. Current research focuses on this species’ life history, population biology, and behavior. The job will involve finding and monitoring nests, assisting with bird capture and banding, quantifying bird behavior, radio-tracking, mapping territories, collecting nest vegetation data, and conducting point-counts. The PhD candidate will develop a project that is complementary to long-term studies of wading bird prey community dynamics, foraging and nesting ecology of wading birds, and restoration of the Everglades ecosystem(see lab web page for details). Of particular interest is the linkage between the aquatic prey communities in the Everglades and adjacent urban ecosystem, and dynamic resource selection by wading birds. In the course of their research, students will be exposed to the process of using science to guide one of the nation’s most comprehensive wetland ecosystem restoration projects. Positions are based on FAU’s main campus in Boca Raton, Florida. Boca Raton is located between the Everglades and an extensive coral reef tract, two of Florida’s most unique natural features. FAU has over 30,000 students and a Carnegie Classification of High Research Activity. Successful applicant will start in August 2017. ALPINE SONGBIRD TECHNICIAN  at University of Wyoming / Wyoming Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit. Aims of this project include investigating Black Rosy-Finch habitat associations, distribution and life history. Work includes backpacking 40-60+ miles per week across mountain ranges from May-September. Transects are conducted at 10,000-13,000’, with bird and nest site locations recorded along with habitat information. Technicians (and crew lead) are expected to enter data on a weekly basis, with an additional paid week at the end of the season to proof entries. I am more interesting in an applicant’s strong interest in alpine/avian ecology, constructive attitude, and ability to operate safely alone in the mountains than climbing or skiing exploits. Long, irregular schedules with missing weekends and objective hazards in the field are standard. A professional attitude and strong work ethic are mandatory. Job Description: Internship begins February 28, 2017 and ends no sooner than May 20, 2017. DUTIES This position provides hands-on training and experience with the fundamentals of environmental education best practices, lesson plan creation, program facilitation, and evaluation. Duties will primarily include: -Planning, developing materials, and facilitating interactive experiences, tours, scout workshops, and other educational programs for visitors at Tracy Aviary. -Preparing materials for and assisting in the facilitation of children’s spring break camp programs. -Providing off-site nature programs at multiple locations throughout Salt Lake City to members of the public spanning a wide range of ages. These programs emphasize the importance of free play in nature and engage holistic family groups. -Evaluating programs and educational materials through evaluation forms and/or visitor observations. -Developing and implementing a capstone internship project. Please note: prior experience not required—we provide on-the-job training and education to prepare interns for educating members of the public. Other duties may include assisting with events, completing maintenance/administrative tasks associated with the programs described above, attending routine organizational and departmental meetings and events, and participating in various training opportunities, as appropriate. Please note that these positions do not involve any direct contact with animals. COMMITMENT This position requires a 40 hour a week commitment over a period of roughly three months. Work hours require applicants to be freely available between 8am and 5pm during their designated work week for the entire duration of service. Job Description: HAWKCOUNTER needed to conduct the full-season spring raptor migration count at Bradbury Mountain State Park in south-central Maine from 15 Mar – 15 May, 2017. Expect some cold, windy, and slow days early on, with busy days of Broad-winged Hawks as the season progresses.  Qualifications: Applicants must be adept at identifying eastern hawks, falcons, and eagles at a distance. Ability to identify non-raptor species helpful, though not a requirement. This site is popular with birding and non-birding visitors, so good communication skills are a must, along with an enthusiasm for repeatedly answering, “How do you know you’re not counting the same birds?” Counter must be able to provide own transportation for the 3-mile commute between the count site and housing. Job Description: Aula Global is seeking four individuals with a strong interest in avian research to assist in collecting breeding and behavioral data on the little know, severely endangered Bare-necked Umbrellabird (Cephalopterus glabricollis) in spring 2017 (March – June). Time commitment ranges from a minimum of 1 week up to 3 months. Our research takes place in Costa Rica at Aula Global Reserve, a private biological reserve not open to the general public. Candidates will work in the field in small teams or independently searching for male leks, nesting females, and feeding sites. Possible duties include intensive behavioral observations, nest monitoring, mist netting, bird handling (banding, measuring, fitting with radio transmitters), and data entry. Interns should expect days to begin before dawn walking the trails in search of displaying males, an activity rarely seen or documented.  Qualifications: Interns must be self-motivated, well organized, able to work well in a small group or independently, tolerant of tropical weather conditions, and comfortable staying in semi-rustic living conditions. The MAPS program is a cooperative network of mist-netting and bird-banding stations dedicated to collecting demographic data towards the conservation of North American landbirds. These data contribute to a) land management recommendations designed to maintain or create quality habitat that will support healthy, productive bird populations, and b) our knowledge of birds’ responses to climate and weather. MAPS provides tremendous opportunities to gain first-class training and field experience in handling, identifying, sexing, aging, and banding wild birds.  Qualifications: All successful applicants are expected to face the rigors and unpredictability of field conditions with good humor and flexibility. While all volunteer positions include an intensive, two week training course in mist-netting, and the identification, handling, banding, and ageing and sexing of landbirds, prior banding experience or a background in wildlife biology or a closely related field is recommended. In addition, volunteers receive individual training in these techniques throughout the field season. Volunteers are expected to spend a minimum of 6 of every 10 days in the field, contingent upon daily weather conditions and logistical considerations. This project aims to determine basic demographic rates of nesting Baird’s and grasshopper sparrows and other grassland songbirds, including nest success and productivity, adult and juvenile within- and across-season survival, and density estimation through point count surveys. This study also aims to explore the habitat relationships that may drive these vital rates. The coordinator would be a member of the International Team at Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, however this study will be highly collaborative and partially funded through the Canadian Wildlife Service and the University of Manitoba. The coordinator will be based out of one of the field sites and lead fieldwork in eastern Montana, western North Dakota, and southern Alberta, CA from May – August each season. The remainder of the year the biologist will be based in Fort Collins, CO. Job Responsibilities: • Serve as primary coordinator of field activities and data collection for Northern Great Plains demographic monitoring of Baird’s sparrow, grasshopper sparrow, chestnut-collared longspur, and Sprague’s pipit. Coordinator will communicate regularly with and report to his/her direct supervisor through BCR’s International Program. • Hire, train, and supervise seasonal employees in nest search and monitoring, radio transmitter attachment and monitoring, and point count surveys. Currently, the Rhode Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex is working on restoration projects designed to restore degraded saltmarsh habitat at two of its refuges - John H. Chafee and Sachuest NWR. Interns will assist with restoration implementation and monitoring activities. Responsibilities include but are not limited to saltmarsh sparrow surveys and mist-netting/banding, saltmarsh sparrow nest searching and monitoring, vegetation surveys, shellfish surveys, eelgrass surveys, fish sampling, planting native saltmarsh grasses, and invasive plant control. When not in Barrow assisting with field work, the technician will be stationed in the Fairbanks office.
