Dear Colleagues, Just a reminder that our monthly WebDev CAFÉ meeting is scheduled for the coming Monday, May 20th, at 3:00pm. We will be meeting in room 120 Psychology Bldg (http://maps.msu.edu/interactive/index.php?location=psy). Mike VanPutten from Communication and Brand Strategy will offer us a presentation on MSU’s new Social Media Guidelines. You may remember that I distributed a memo sent to deans, chairs, and directors last month when the Guidelines were introduced It included the following link to the Guidelines document, which you may wish to review: http://cabs.msu.edu/documents/msu-guidelines-for-social-media.pdf. I look forward to seeing you next Monday! Have a great weekend, Burt

Google Analytics help

Hello,

I just wondered if anyone was aware of any groups who are discussing how they use or want to use Google Analytics? I am working with data from MSU Extension and trying to tease out some of the reports so they make sense, and really say what I think they are saying. I am really looking for some people to act as a sounding board and am certainly willing to provide the same. I'd appreciate your help in finding anyone who might be interested in discussing these issues. [...]

Hello All,

WebAIM conducted a survey in March 2013 of users with low vision (not blind users.) The report can be found at http://webaim.org/projects/lowvisionsurvey/

Each of the topic reported is interesting, and the last part ("Problematic Items") might be especially interesting to many of us. It's interesting to see that lack of skip links is the least problematic item identified by the participants. Not surprisingly: complex page layout is listed as the most problematic one.

I asked one of the CampusAD Exchange SysAdmins that question specifically, last week. In the CampusAD mail system they cannot guarantee that the message will remain encrypted all the way from sender to recipient. It may not remain encrypted during storage, or in communications between some of the servers that make up the Exchange architecture. So, like many security questions, the answer is, "It depends." It's dependent on the capabilities of your internal mail system and how it's configured. [...]

Thanks. And that seems sane enough but we don't require that students physically appear if they are/have been MSU student employees. All the local entry "paperwork" staff want is the APID. Then once the hire paperwork has gotten through HR once for ISP Dean, that same student still has to be "hired" by 6 other units/projects not all in the same building so they can charge their time specifically to the unit receiving their work. I gather my plan should be to bring the student in regardless of whether they are in the MSU HR system then bring them back [...]

None of my outgoing traffic is blocked on my development environment.

If it really does work on 587, that should be documented on IT Services' pages. I don't know who we need to talk to about doing that, but hopefully someone at ITS is paying attention to this thread. We wound up implementing it using GMail, and it works fine like that. There wouldn't be much gain for this application to switch back to using MSU (confusing recipients) at this point, but I'll keep it in mind for future applications. [...]

Dear Colleagues, Because April began on a Monday, our monthly WebDev CAFÉ meeting was scheduled for tomorrow (3rd Monday). I have been immersed in work with colleagues to stage the MSU Science Festival <http://sciencefestival.msu.edu/> , which runs through next Sunday, and haven’t had an extra minute to plan our meeting. My apologies for that; demands of the day job, what can I say. SO, unless there’s objection, let’s plan to postpone the meeting for a week and convene on Monday April 22nd, 3-4:30pm. Cindy Helms will send out a notice with the location. As I indicated in March, we really [...]

More info at http://blog.chromium.org/2013/04/blink-rendering-engine-for-chromium.html

They say they won't use CSS vendor prefixes and since it's base is on the current WebKit rendering engine it should work the same as Chrome does today.
