The Opportunity Resource
Fund (“Fund”) is seeking two summer James Madison
College volunteer interns
to assist with a variety of projects. The Fund is a nonprofit, community
development financial institution (CDFI) accepting investments and issuing
loans throughout Michigan.
A single family mortgage program was begun last year with loans focused in the Detroit area. The
Fund has more than 25 years of experience providing loans
to revitalize neighborhoods and communities, and working with other nonprofits
to provide affordable, quality living space for low income adults as well as
promoting social and economic justice.

Office: Report to the Vice President of Lending and work with the Loan
Team. Office Hours – flexible. Projects will include
assisting with research on single family mortgages, assisting with editing
policies and procedures, organizing and editing loan closing documents, and
participating in site visits. Assist with maintaining hard copy files of
loan records. Work may also include assisting with editing documents for
monthly Board meetings and credit review. May also assist with review of
client formal written communications and migration of data to new
software. Student may assist with the annual luncheon held in June
recognizing new loan recipients and those who have fully repaid loans during
the last calendar year. Student has the option of ride share from
Williamston to Detroit Office.
Lansing
Office: Report to the Vice President of Finance/CFO and work with the
Finance Team. Office Hours – flexible. Projects will include
assisting with surveying clients for loan beneficiary information, assisting
with financial review and requests for annual financial information, assisting
with entering data from property tax and assessment records, following up on
property tax status of summer 2012 payments, and assisting with file merging
and record retention. Assist with maintaining hard copy files of loan
records. May also assist with review of client formal written
communications and migration of data to new software. Student may assist
with the annual luncheon held in June recognizing new loan recipients and those
who have fully repaid loans during the last calendar year.
Interns will have the
opportunity to attend the June Board meeting, one or more staff meetings, one
or more site visits, and to observe and gain experience in an office setting of
a nonprofit CDFI. Students will be provided access to a computer, copier,
printer, and phone to perform duties. Looking for 20 – 30 hours per
week beginning in May and commencing in August or when fall semester
resumes. Normal office hours are Monday – Friday, 8:30 am – 5:00
pm. Intern hours will be during regular office hours on Monday –
Thursday.

letter outlining why the student is seeking an opportunity to work with a CDFI,
nonprofit. It would be very helpful for the applicant to have finance or
accounting experience or course work. Student should provide a summary of
volunteer history with nonprofits - this may be included in the cover
letter.
