The Honorable Richard Zeile
attended (1969-73) and taught at (1977-81) Detroit Lutheran High West where his life was changed by the witness and example of believing teachers and peers. He attended Valparaiso University where he met his wife, Barbara, with whom he has 4 (now adult) children, one of whom currently serves with the U.S. Marines in Korea. Rev. Zeile holds master's degrees from University of Michigan's Rackham School (Ann Arbor), Harvard Divinity School (Cambridge, MA), and Concordia Theological Seminary (Ft.Wayne, IN), as well as a Specialist's certificate in Educational Administration from Wayne State University (Detroit), and a Doctor of Ministry from Detroit's Ecumenical Theological Seminary where he wrote a thesis on Detroit Lutheran school closings during the 1990's. After teaching at Lutheran West, Dr. Zeile worked in social ministry for Lutheran Outreach of Ft.Wayne (1981-82), vicared at First Lutheran Church in Boston focusing on campus ministry (1982-85), and pastored Christ Lutheran Church & School of Maplewood, NJ (1986-91). He served as Headmaster and Associate Pastor at Zion, Detroit (1991-93), then at Redford Lutheran, Detroit (1993-99). He helped organize Old Redford Academy charter school (1998-2000), taught science briefly at Crockett Academy (2000), and was Chaplain Resident at Detroit's Sinai-Grace Hospital (2001). He has served as Pastor & Headmaster at St. John's Lutheran Church & School in Taylor since 2001. Dr. Zeile has written curriculum for CPH, devotions for Portals of Prayer, My Devotions, and Higher Things, and articles appearing in Lutheran Forum, Bride of Christ, Biblical Archaeological Review, and Lutheran Education. He has taught as adjunct professor of education at Concordia University, Ann Arbor, since 2009. In 2010, citizens of Michigan elected Dr. Zeile to the State Board of Education which chose him in 2011 to be Michigan's representative to the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE).
