Dear Students Interested in Applied International Development and Community Engagement in India,

Greetings…I’m writing to kindly invite you to the last remaining formal information session for the 2012 program:

5:30 PM: Thursday, February 2 in 319 Agriculture Hall

The program includes the following exciting opportunities:

·         Investigate the role of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in promoting sustainable community development

·         Complete multi-day, field-based practicum on integrated rural development at Shanti Ashram (a leading NGO in Coimbatore, India)

·         Study role of women’s self-help groups and micro-financing schemes

·         Interact directly with local partners in development, including children and families

·         Start working now on campus with MSU SAID (Students Advancing International Development) to make a difference in the lives of vulnerable children and families in India and build international problem-solving and communication skills that enhance resumes

·         Investigate the role of market-based mechanisms in promoting development

·         Directly experience and practice meditation, yoga, and Ayurveda

·         Explore Mughal-era monuments, including the famed Taj Mahal

·         Investigate the ancient Hindu temples of Tamil Nadu

·         Learn about Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, and Christianity in India

·         Tour the beautiful backwaters of Kerala (overnight houseboat)

·         Earn credit in IAH 211B (and satisfy university requirement)
