Environmental
Planning Instruments in
With a Special
Focus on the German Planning System
In
this one-credit course, students will be introduced to various environmental
planning instruments derived from European Union directives. As EU
directives have no immediate legal force, their implementation in the German
planning system will be used as an illustrative case. Nevertheless, similar
ways of executing the EU directives can be observed in all EU member countries.
The
course is geared towards undergraduate and graduate students in urban and
regional planning, landscape architecture, and environmental design.
The
course will be organized in four large blocks:

Introduction to environmental
legislation and environmental planning in the EU; Environmental Impact
Assessment (EIA) for projects; Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) for
plans and programs

European Habitats Directive and
ecological network “Natura 2000” and their implementation in
planning processes
