The Emerging Leader's Program which is part of the National Breast Cancer
Coalition Advocate Summit will take place May 5-8, 2012 in Washington, DC at
the Hyatt Regency Crystal City. This is a specific training program for
young emerging leaders who have a passion and interest in becoming involved
within their own states in legislative issues, outreach and community
services in the area of breast cancer. These students would be working
closely with the Michigan Breast Cancer Coalition. They will apply for
scholarships through the National Breast Cancer Coalition. If accepted the
cost of their shared room and conference fee would be covered by NBCC. Most
meals are covered at the conference. Michigan Breast Cancer Coalition would
consider, once accepted, offering additional funds for travel. The deadline
for scholarships is February 10th.
National Breast Cancer Coalition will put a higher funding importance on
applications of students that have an affiliation with the Michigan Breast
Cancer Coalition. So interested students should first contact me by email
before application submission and we will speak by phone thereafter. If
there is a group of interested students, I can schedule a meeting with them
at the college, present a powerpoint as a basic introduction and we can also
schedule a webinar which will cover the program in more detail. Last year
over 100 students attended the Summit and participated in the student
workshops and lobby day activities. These students are affiliated with
other colleges throughout the country and work closely with state breast
cancer organizations. It is a wonderful opportunity as National Breast
Cancer Coalition is a pioneer in education and training programs teaching
breast cancer advocacy leaders the science, research and public policy
behind the disease. Students who are chosen to attend by scholarship will
be kept very busy. They will be joining the Michigan Breast Cancer
Coalition the last day of the Summit in attending meetings with all Michigan
legislators.
