What does everyone do for Events Management throughout the
University? What tools or systems do you use?
It seems as though the central services university calendar/events system works
well for MSU.edu but it doesn't lend itself well to individual units. For
instance if we wanted to host all of our events in the main MSU events calendar
for the College of Education those events would primarily live on that calendar
vs. being able to display the events on our own college website fluidly. I can
export the events, but there's no RSS. The portal is very generic and doesn't
have the ability to be stylize it seems.
We currently use a homegrown system (college of ed events) due to these reasons and many others.
The problem is that for more features or for bug fixes, we're responsible to
add or fix them and that costs a lot of time - which seems a bit wasteful when
so many other units are doing the same thing. I've seen solutions from the College of Engineering
that use a separate system altogether, that seem to work very well and have all
of the features that users expect... except that it doesn't appear to be
connected with the university system.
One solution could be adding RSS functionality to the main calendaring system,
which may get more people/units involved in using it. Add extensibility so that
connectivity can be accomplished. Having the university calendaring site/system
function like the new research system does would be very beneficial to
everyone.
Thoughts/Comments? What does your unit use?
