4.  MSU Wheat Variety and Nitrogen Fertility Plot Tour

Ingham/Livingston County MSU Extension presents “Amber Waves of Grain”, a
wheat variety and nitrogen fertility plot tour.  The event takes place June
30, 2009 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at MSU Wheat Variety Trial Plots, located at
Dietz Farm (2661 Dietz Rd, Williamston, MI)

What variety of wheat are you going to plant next year?  We hope that you
will use the MSU Wheat Variety Trial to help make that decision.  Yield,
disease resistance, milling quality, and in-head sprouting, are all
important characteristics to consider, and MSU provides unbiased information
to Michigan producers to help them make the best decisions possible.

Late-June is a perfect time to view the MSU Wheat Variety Trial to discuss
wheat management and differences in yield, disease resistance, maturity, and
other attributes of the varieties in the plots.  Janet Lewis, wheat breeder
for MSU, will also be present to discuss her work developing new wheat
varieties with improved disease resistance, higher yield, reduced sprouting,
and/or higher quality.

5.   2009 MSU Extension Organic Tour

Have you ever wondered how organic farmers are able to manage weeds, pests,
diseases, and soil fertility, especially on large organic farms?  What type
of equipment do they use?  How much labor is required?  How effective are
their methods?  You may have heard that the new crop organic corn will sell
from $7.00 to $8.50/bu, but how do you market it?

To answer these and other questions, join us for the 2009 Organic Tour to
the ‘Thumb’ of Michigan!   This year, we will stop at five of the largest
organic farms in the state, ranging from 1,000 to 3,500 acres, one of which
has a 300+ cow organic dairy.  As we interact with the host farmers we will
look at some of their fields, examine the equipment that they use, and learn
about organic farm management, including crop marketing and value added
opportunities.    Each farm tour will be about one hour, and lunch is

6.   2009 Ag Innovations Meeting

Come observe and discuss recent work that the Capital Area Innovative
Farmers have done on ‘modified relay-intercropping’ of soybeans in wheat,
nitrogen rates in corn, frost-seeded red clover in wheat, and other timely
topics.  The event takes place July 14, 2009 at 4:00 p.m. across from 2576
Tuttle Rd, Mason, MI. Cost is free to attend with dinner included. Please
