great chance for not only animal farmers but also farmers growing or
considering to grow forage. If you are in the area on May 6 thenI hope that

MSU Forage Variety Trial Plot Tour*
May 6, 2009
What grass should I plant with my alfalfa? I have somewhat
sandy soils; what forage species should I use? Does it really matter
which grass or legume varieties I buy? Grass is grass, right?
No! Just as with other crop and livestock species, there are tremendous
differences between species and varieties in relative maturity,
winter-hardiness, yield, forage quality, insect/disease resistance, drought
resistance, persistence, and palatability. Dont throw your money away by
buying forage seed for varieties that are not right for your pasture/hay
production system. Join us as we examine experimental plots of: alfalfa,
potato-leafhopper resistant alfalfa, falcate alfalfa, perennial ryegrass,
orchardgrass, tall fescue, smooth brome, timothy, meadow brome, and festulolium
varieties.
