This site describes one problem with the drives failing, then only after reading up on the history of the problem, you can run his utility to recover some of the cartridges messed-up due to the drive problem. This may, or may not, be the cause of your troubles.

I have one, on a running OpenBSD box next to me. If the disk is FAT32 or NTFS, I should be able to read it. Contact me in email if you want to come over.
