Job Description: This position exists to support the Prairie Habitat Team
and upland game bird research programs in Minnesota's farm landscape by
planning, executing, and reporting research evaluating effectiveness of
habitat management on grassland birds; providing technical assistance to the
Prairie Habitat Team monitoring populations and management activities for
mourning doves; coordinating, analyzing, and reporting on wildlife
population and habitat surveys; and disseminating advanced technical
expertise to resources professionals and the public.
Responsibilities include:
- Design independent research projects and surveys evaluating the
effectiveness of habitat management for upland game birds and other
grassland birds in Minnesota?s farm landscape, and address conservation
needs of mourning doves in order to increase scientific knowledge, improve
management effectiveness, and conserve the resources.
- Implement and direct advanced, independent research and surveys using
appropriate research techniques so study objectives (regarding evaluating
the effectiveness of habitat management for upland game birds and other
grassland birds in Minnesota?s farm landscape, and addressing conservation
needs of mourning doves) are met, hypotheses are tested, and conclusions are
drawn that are statistically and scientifically valid.
- Report results and conclusions of research in oral and written format so
that findings can be used by scientists, natural resource managers,
administrators, and the public within Minnesota, the U.S., and
internationally.
- Provide technical assistance; contribute data and expert opinion to the
Prairie Habitat Team, committees, agencies, and organizations; and review
research proposals and technical manuscripts so that impacts of resource
decisions on upland game birds, other grassland birds, mourning doves, and
their habitats are considered in a sound, scientific basis.
- Advance the technology of wildlife science in Minnesota by remaining
current in wildlife and other biological sciences, statistical design and
analyses, and computer applications.
Minimum Qualifications: - Two years of professional wildlife research
experience (i.e., NRS, Intermediate-Wildlife Research).
- MA/MS degree in wildlife ecology, or MA/MS degree in a closely related
area.
- Research and/or management experience with prairie grassland wildlife and
their habitats.
- Oral communication and writing skills sufficient to document completed
research.
- Computer proficiency, including knowledge of databases, spreadsheets and
statistical programs sufficient to manage data input, retrieval and
compilation, design simple computer programs, maintain data bases and train
others in the use of the system.
- Research and analysis skills.
- Knowledge of wildlife ecology and management, data analysis and
interpretation sufficient to conduct research investigations, interpret and
analyze data, and prepare final reports and support research activities of
higher level research biologists.
- Ability to formulate hypotheses and experimental designs sufficient to
support the statistical and scientific validity of research projects.
- Ability to communicate orally and in written form with diverse audiences,
including both lay and peer groups, sufficient to document and disseminate
completed research results.
- Ability to plan, organize, and conduct field research sufficient to
collect pertinent data.
- Ability to interpret wildlife and other data sufficient to draw reasonable
conclusions.
- Ability to conduct many phases of field work including aerial and
terrestrial, radio telemetry, capturing and handling wildlife animals,
wildlife census, vegetation and food habit analysis.
- Ability to maintain and operate equipment, such as boats, motors,
trailers, etc., sufficient to collect data.
- Ability to work effectively and courteously with people.
- Ability to lead work of others.
Requires occasionally lifting articles such as 50-pound bags of feed maximum
and frequently lifting and/or carrying objects such as heavy tools and file
boxes. This job may require walking or standing to a significant degree on
rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and
pulling of arm and/or leg controls.
Requires a Class D Driver's License: a single unit vehicle with a gross
vehicle weight of less than 26,000 pounds. This is a basic driver's license.
Operators may also tow vehicles/trailers as long as the gross combination
weight does not exceed 26,000 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications: - Ph.D. in wildlife ecology or closely related
area.
- GIS/GPS Skills.
- Safety training.
- Human dimensions coursework or experience.
